On September first 2006 my girlfriend and I visited Andy Cole (Flagman) and together we visited Whipsnade animal park. The weather forecast had been bad and got worse and worse as September first came closer. We were happily surprised that the weather turned out to be fantastic that Friday. Loads of sunshine (I even got sunburned!) and only one little shower. Whipsnade is a fantastic park, with excellent enclosures and loads of different species of animals. We had a blast. After we visited Andy, Sandra and I left for Dartmoor and we stayed there for 2 weeks. It was one of the best holidays we ever had.

I wish all TN-members and their families a merry x-mas and a healthy, successful and happy 2007 full of photography!

General info from wikipedia.org:

Tigers (Panthera tigris) are mammals of the Felidae family and one of four "big cats" in the Panthera genus. They are superpredators and the largest cat species in the world, comparable in size to the biggest fossil felids. The Royal Bengal Tiger is the most common subspecies of tiger, constituting approximately 80% of the entire tiger population, and is found in the Indian subcontinent. The tiger's beautiful blend of grace and ferocity led the legendary author and conservationist, Jim Corbett to remark, "The Tiger is a large hearted gentleman with boundless courage...".

Most tigers live in forests or grasslands, for which their camouflage is ideally suited, and where it is easy to hunt prey that are faster or more agile. Among the big cats, only the tiger and jaguar are strong swimmers; tigers are often found bathing in ponds, lakes, and rivers. Tigers hunt alone and eat primarily medium to large sized herbivores such as sambar deer, wild pigs, gaur, and water buffalo. However, they also take smaller prey on occasion. Old and injured tigers have been known to take to easier prey such as humans or domestic cattle and are then termed as man-eaters or cattle-lifters which often leads to them being captured, shot or poisoned.

Humans are the tiger's only true predator, as tigers are often poached illegally for their fur. Also, their bones and nearly all body parts are used in traditional Chinese medicine for a range of purported uses including pain killers and aphrodisiacs. Poaching for fur and destruction of habitat have greatly reduced tiger populations in the wild. A century ago, it is estimated there were over 100,000 tigers in the world; now numbers are down to below 2,500 mature breeding individuals, with no subpopulation containing more than 250 mature breeding individuals.

Hi Peter

Sure sounds like you had a wonderful time with Andy and that Whipsnade is every bit as beautiful as it seems given all the magnificent photos we have had the privilege to view from that location. This photo of yours is being no exception to the rule.

This young tiger sure is a brilliant specimen. It seems to be very relaxed yet ever alert or aware of its surrounding. That fixed focal stare makes me think that it saw some bird or assuming pray somewhere in the distance and your composition/crop gave it sufficient space to stare into. The colours are fresh and joyful while the details are crisp and the exposure was well controlled.

Great work and TFS.

PS. Have a great Christmas and a wonderful 2007.

Hi Pieter,
He's definitely looking at something...

The tiger is very regal looking Pieter. You caught his expression showing his interest in something in the distance. We have Sumattran tigers in the Akld Zoo and I can see the differences on this tiger.
Well displayed, thank you

Pieter, a royal pose in the image.

Great saturation, pov and composition.

I like contrast and sharpness too.

A wonderful cat, a strong image.

Hi Pieter, great shot, great pose!!!

Hey, Pieter, what a good lens you have :)
This is a very nice photo, the composition excludes the fence that was in the distant background, if only it was high dead grass we might think it was in a natural habitat!
Exposure is just perfect and the composition works well. I always wonder about the composition of this kind of shot, where the subject is to one side, you can't avoid having the head in the centre of the frame, which is usually a no-no, but if you want the head at 1/3rd, you have to centre the whole body. I think this looks best.

Nice shot good POV and great colours nice framing and compo best rgds Necip. P.T.

Fantastic image of this tiger. I like the slightly off center composition, and colors and sharpness are excellent.

I wish you'd called Alan Turvey while you were at Whipsnade, I'm sure he would have met you. I bet meeting Andy was fun though.

Have a great Wednesday.

Hi Peter,
