Colias palaeno,

Colias palaeno (Linnaeus, 1761)

Moreland Clouded Yellow
Hochmoor-Gelbling
Veengeeltje
Svavelgul höfjäril
Myrgulvinge
Mose Hosommerfugl
Suokeltaperhonen
Szlaczkoń torfowiec
Žltáčik čučoriedkový
Žluťásek borůvkový
Solitaire

Family: Pieridae
Subfamily: Coliadinae

Wingspan: 40 – 50 mm.

A strikingly colourful, fast flying butterfly that may be seen in morelands and humid locations where its caterpillar’s feeding plants Vaccinium uliginosum and Vaccinium myrtillus exist. Male butterflies show bright lemon yellow wings, females show white scales instead of yellow ones on the upperside of wings.

Both sexes show strongly contrasting broad black borders on the uppersides of wings, green eyes, and crimson fringes on wings, crimson legs, and antennae.

The specimen presented here seems to be a freshly emerged individual with wings not completely hardened yet, thus showing a few glimpses of the strongly contrasting uppersides of wings at rest.

Distribution: North America, Sachalin, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Siberia, Europe from 47° to 70° latitude, as far west as Vosges, and French Alpes. Wide spread in its northern range, but very local in the southern parts. Extinct in many parts of central Europe through the disappearance of its habitats, and severely endangered in its still existing isolated colonies in central European mountain regions. Staying closely to their breeding grounds, they may be seen there in good numbers from June to August.

Red List for Austria: 2 – severely endangered
Red List for Germany: 2 – severely endangered

Location:

Nisslalm, near Gries im Sulztal, on alpine meadows on northern slopes at 2100m above sealevel.

Sulztal Valley.

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter,
very well done, this is great shot with excellent detail, as usual. The markings on this butterfly are very striking and your composition shows them off to the fullest. Vivid colour and perfect DOF.

Hi Peter,
A very effective POV, that bring us an excellent view of this specimen.
I like so much the rich texture seen on its wings, the little hairs and the curious red strip all along the profile.
You got a beautiful effect with the DOF choice used and the nice gradations at the background.
My compliments and thanks for share it.
Best regards,
JM

This is a little beauty Peter and this is a perfect capture of it. Details, perspective, exposure and composition are excellent. I love this pink line and its wings texture a lot. This is superb! Thanks,

Hello Peter,
I love the Clouded Yellow butterflies but unfortunately they're rarely seen here. Your close capture is outstanding showing very sharp details and lovely colours. I like its pose and the green soft background is perfect. Excellent composition!

Hello Peter,
I don't know how many shots I have taken of C palaeno this year but none are to my satisfaction: either not sharp or sharp but the specimen was worn.
In this shot you show both excellent sharpness and a very fresh fine specimen. Ijnterestingly it has not folded its wings correctly, a forewing being bent to show the black border.
First class composition and natural BBG.
TFs and have a nice weekend.

What a fine capture of this Clouded Yellow, Peter! The colours are fantastic.
The image is so very sharp every detail on the wings is crystal clear.
I love the composition as a whole.
Thanks for sharing yet another masterpiece.
Warm regards.

Hallo Peter,
Anne

Hi Peter
Excellent shot of this rare Lycaenidae. Perfect colours and composition. Unfortunately the upper wing is broken a little bit ;-)
I've never seen this species - you're very lucky guy!

Chris

Hello Peter,

Once again you show us a rare beauty! You must be spending a long time on trips in the mountains to find all these species. It's a shame they are endangered or even extinct in many areas.

Composition:

As usually your POV and composition are great. The butterfly is presented very well, standing on a plant and having plenty of open space in front of it. I like the slight diagonal placing of the plant and subject. They are perfectly emphasized by the well defocused background.

Colors:

You captured warm tones of greens and yellows. They make this picture look appealing! I especially like the crimson fringes on wings and the same crimson color on legs and antennae. I think this is a unique mark which helps identifying the species.

Contrast:

I find the contrast to be well adjusted, enhancing the details in the subject. The dark background contrasts nicely with the brighter butterfly! There is also some nice chromatic contrast between red and green which adds even more appeal.

Exposure:

The same excellent control of light as in all your other shots. The details were preserved perfectly in both highlights and shadows. The light is soft and it casts no harsh shadows.

Focus:

By accurately focusing on the butterfly you obtained sharp details in the subject and deep enough DOF to include the whole body of the butterfly while keeping the background OOF.

Wonderfully captured and presented. The notes are also well written! Thank you for sharing!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

simply stunning colours, details and composition! Another addition to that fabulous coffee-table book (I never thought of it as something to relieve boredom! -- A good coffee table book has wonderful big photos in it, so that every day I can open it to a new piece of art!)

Hi Peter.
I do not know is it possible to reproduce the butterfly better. (I am not quite sincere. I know it is impossible.) Terrific reproduction of all tiny hair and other beautiful details of this charming butterfly and plant. Soft light and perfectly saturated colours are fantastic. Cropping and composition are outstanding as always. Thanks for given pleasure. Bravo.
Alexei.

Fantástico disparo Peter.
Geniales los colores así como la nitidez.
Excelente bg y buen PoV en esta delicada mariposa.
Saludos, JL.
