Distributed through temperate Asia into Central Europe, northern Spain, Italy, the Balkan peninsula, and southern Scandinavia, the Mazarine Blue is a common sight on alpine meadows and can be met in two generations from May to September. Its caterpillar's feeding plant is Trifolium pratense.

On late sunny afternoons, many of them may be seen enjoying the warm sunrays in a cute head-down position.

And, all day long, they love to congregate on wet spots, sometimes in great numbers.

The location: Mussen, rich alpine meadows above mixed forests between 1600m and 2200m above sealevel. The meadows are cut in order to keep trees from entering, but they are cut every second year only in alternating patches to allow blossoming plants and insects to successfully finish their life cycles.

The camera: SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 18mm macro zoom (equivalent 110mm at full size SLR), F/5, 1/500 sec., ISO-125, hand held, no flash. 08.06.2007, 17:16.

Postwork: Photoshop Elements, cropped, resized to web, resharpened, levels slighty adjusted.

Guten Tag Peter,

Hello Peter,
Sharp, clear, natural and so on and so on. What more does a picture need?
I like the low point of view from which you have taken this picture. The sky in the background creates a certain kind of depth in the image.
Regards, Jacob

hallo Peter,
Anne

Hello my dear friend

I know we haven't "spoken" in quite a long time but i have to tell you that whenever i had the chance (time and internet connection) i took a look at what were you posting.
Unfortunately time for TN was in very little quantities this summer for me...but this will soon change :)

This is a splendid macro shot from you!
The details on this "hair-ball' :)) are fantastic and the contrast between his blue and the green of the grass makes such a pleasant photo to look at.
Very good POV and DOF as well, with a exact exposure to match it all.
Great work!

Take care and TFS
Horia

Hi Peter,
Waouw, one of the best shots of this little argus, I'm impressive by the details and the beautiful colors, nice BG also
Thank you
Best Regards

Hi Peter,
Really outstanding colours and exposure. Light is a plus here!
The right dof to produce a solf and realistic background, excelente pov, pose and composition, make of this a magnificent and optimistic photo.
Finally workshop shows a really crowded place!
TFS and best regards,

Hi, dear Peter.
I have marked next your masterpiece as my favorite with great pleasure. I am really amazed with features of this picture. Reproduction of all tiny details of the beautiful little butterfly is terrific and strikes my imagination. Pleasantness of the colour palette (blue sky is wonderful and harmonize with yellow-green grass color tones perfectly) and smoothness of the BG are simply great. Superb POV and composition of the shot. Very impressive lighting and wonderful shadows. Bravo, my friend, unsurpassed master of photography.
Alexei.

Hi Peter
Fantastic photo. I love the green and blue OOF peaceful buckground. Sharpness and DOF is perfect. Nice POV and good compo (but I think that you could crop it a little bit more from the bottom)
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Guten Tag Peter!
It is really nice to see your new presentation. Especially so interesting like this one. The first picture is really sharp, detailed, very colourful and well composed, but today bravo especially for the great documentary image from the... worshop! I have seen some aggregation of butterflies in my life but there were usually only 2-3 species (if not the only one but in higher number of individuals).
Bravo and TFS this interesting presentation!
Radomir

PS. I'll add to the PES gallery some of your picture during this week. Thank you very much for cooperation! :>

Bonjour,

Hello Peter,

Das is wunderschoen!

Herzlichen Dank!

Mit Besten Gruessen,
Eddie

Hello Peter,
Though this male semiargus has already shaken off some of his scales, you have captures him with excellent detail and from a fine POV that shows the shine of the lighter blue near his body. Excellent composition on the grass blades.
Thanks for sharing this and best wishes,
Ivan

Thanks also for your kind thoughts on my recovery: I hope to be fully active within a couple of weeks.
