Family: Lycaenidae (Blues)

Wing span: 28 - 32mm

Distributed from Northern Spain, France, Italy, through Central Europe, Eastern Europe from Lithuania to Greece, Turkey, temperate Asia to the Altai, the butterfly may be seen in two generations in April/May, and July/August from the lowlands up to 1500m. The species prefers grassland locations rich with flowers, and does not seem to be common.

Subspecies subalpinus as shown is uniformly drab coloured in both sexes, lacking the orange submarginal spots and the female’s orange upper sides of wings. It will be met on climatically protected alpine meadows between 1200m and 2500m above sea level in the Pyrenees, French, Swiss, Italian, Austrian, and Bavarian Alps.

With its close relatives showing powerful red or blue signalling colours in the male sex, it is remarkable to note that this species apparently has chosen to manage its communication between males and females in a way other than sending visual signals – possibly emitting scents which is done by many blues that can be seen rubbing their wings to trigger their scenting scales. But it could as well be possible that there are structural scales on L. tityrus’ wings that are reflecting colours in the ultraviolet range of the spectre that are simply invisible for human eyes. I think that some little zoological research on this might be of interest.

Caterpillars feed on Rumex scutatus.

The nominal lowlands species Lycaena tityrus (Poda, 1761) has been presented here before:

Male.
Female.
Underside of wings.

The Location: Nisslalm, Gries im Sulztal, Tyrol, at an elevation of 2050m.

The camera:
SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, zoom setting 17mm tele macro (equivalent 100mm at full size SLR), F/4.5, 1/250 sec., ISO-125, hand held, no flash. 01.07.2007, 15:33.

Great image of Sooty Copper, Peter.
The details and colours are marvellous.
The angle of exposure creates a powerful composition with the butterfly perched on a shapely blade of grass.
Thanks for sharing this beauty and best regards.

Hi, dear Peter.
I am impressed with shooting distance (I have remembered your comments very well.) When I had only one macro lens with minimal focusing distance 15 cm the process of shooting was really a kind of sport. Later I have began to prefer another distance, significantly more longer. It so difficult to come so close to tiny butterfly. You have done it skillfully. And the result is so impressive. Details of your butterfly pictures the most amazing among TN gallery. I don't speak about composition, lights and colours. These components at your shots are breathtaking. My heart wishes and regards.
Alexei.

I amazed at how close you got to these wary little things, very impressive photo!

hello peter,

Hallo Peter,
Anne

Hello Peter,
What I can say? maybe: again the splendi picture of butterfly? Maybe: another great lesson of entomology with special regards to Lepidoptera? Maybe: great shot from the technical point of view? Or - the best - all these thing in one time :) Once again you prooved that macro photography is not only your passion but also a profession :)
My friendly regards,
Radomir
