Great White Pelican
Pelecanus onocrotalus

The Pelican shots were taken at St. James Park, London. I took a lot of shots but many had some of the whites burnt out, even with exposure compensation and a Polorizer filter. Peter (Heyshamite) wanted to see one with a view of the full Bill, so here it is.

There are five pelicans among the exotic birds resident in St James's Park (one of the eight Royal Parks in London). One comes from Louisiana and four from Eastern Europe (They all get on well).
The pelicans were first introduced into St James's Park by the Russian Ambassador, who presented them to Charles II in 1664. The tradition continues - in 1977, the ambassador presented two pelicans from Astrakhan, (named Astra and Khan). They are fed 12 pounds of fish, plus a vitamin supplement, each day, but also catch their own prey from the lake. Obviously very spoiled and they like posing for photographers.

Hi Deborah,
a very impressive shot IMO. Excellent sharp detail and focus, the dark background really makes this Pelican stand out vividly here and you've done a good job exposing those white feathers too, very well done!

Le contraste blanc et noir est du plus bel effet.
Bonne journée.

Hello Debz,
Yes, I've heard about these resident London pelicans.
Fantastic light exposure management in this shot. The levels are just right. That you also made a sharp and well composed image of this Great White Pelican to create a first class portrait makes this a top class professional-looking post.
Well done, thanks and have a good weekend,

Hello Deborah,
Very impressive close capture of the Pelican with its long beak resting on its chest! Excellent sharpness and I like its plumage. You've coped really well with the sharp contrasts. I like the framing too. Well done!
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Deborah,
Thanks for the 'full bill' look. Detail is great. Sharpness and colour spot on.
Nothing wrong but you could try hard cropping on right and bottom just to see what the portrait looks like with the full bill in.
Well done,
