Genus: Plebeius
Family: Lycaenidae
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Order: Lepidoptera

Wingspan: 25 – 30mm

Walking up a path through the xerothermic vegetation of the southern slopes of Hexenberg in spring, emerald green lizards were noisily dashing through the grass, and some deeply blue butterflies were fighting against the stiff breeze, rapidly flying close to the ground, and resting for short periods basking in the sun allowing me to take a portrait.

Widespread from Japan through temperate Asia to Europe, the Argus Blue may be found in most parts of Europe with the exception of Ireland, Scotland, and northern Scandinavia, from the lowlands up to 1500m in the mountains.

In our region there are two generations May-June, and July-August. The Argus Blue prefers heaths, and scrubby and grassy sunny spots. Caterpillars feed on Genista pilosa, Melilotus alba, Lotus corniculatus etc., and they live in symbiosis with various species of ants: Lasius niger, Formica cinerea etc.

Hello Peter,
Interesting to see the Austrian version of P. argus. It has broader black wing borders than ours and the blue is a little richer in this male.
Whatever, this is an excellent capture taken from a superb POV with almost total sharpness.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Best wishes, Ivan

Splendida macro, eccellenti POV e composizione con una messa a fuoco selettiva che stacca la farfalla dallo sfondo e crea un bellissimo effetto tridimensionale, ottima nitidezza e magnifici i colori. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hello Peter,
This is a lovely capture of the Silver-studded Blue. They've just emerged here and I tried to capture one today but in the strong wind they settle deep down in the grass! This one ís sharply in focus and stands out beautifully from the background. It is a very fine dark version in lovely colours. Well done!
TFS and have a nice weekend! Ulla

Hi, dear Peter.
You always managed to show all beauty of the species. Reproduction of every hair of the butterfly at wonderful upper POV and impressive wingspread of the butterfly are fantastic (but usual for you). Blurred leaf form an amazing green ocean. The best BG for this beauty. Tremendous work. My congratulations.

Hi Peter,
Neighbors today. A lovely capture of this beautiful blue butterfly. Superb details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Saludos y buen Domingo: J. Ignasi

Lieber Peter,

Hello Peter
How splendid this capture, so sharp and clear with the Silver-studded Blue wings open. I had never seen this species in the places where I ususally go till last may, and then I saw it in both places, Sorriba and Madrid, rather close to the place where I live the most of the year. It was rather surprising to me, but probably it is that I had never looked for butterflies in may, and less in Madrid.
Your picture surpass my captures in all aspects so I doubt if I will dare to post them, je,je.
Thank you very much for your marvellous job.

Hello Peter,
Amazing blue Plebeius argus against brillant green background; looks like almost a blue flower. TFS.

Hallo Peter
Thank you for sharing this tiny blue coloured butterfly with us. It is really so small it is almost miniaturised by the size of the leaf. It looks as if it was dusted with blue powder and that creates such a joyful and merry feeling. The green leaf and dark backdrop highlight the colour and the beauty of this butterfly. The black and white lining on the wings are really an eye catcher, and the clarity of the details of the antennas is really special. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
