Wing span: 27 - 33mm.

Just returned from extended trips into Slovenia's and Austria's high alpine regions and their wealthy diversity of plants and insects, I am still far from finished yet with working through all those observations I could make earlier this year in spring and summer at the hills in the close vicinity of my hometown Vienna.

Here is another species that was first described from the Vienna region: Zygaena loti, a burnet that tends to show up a bit earlier in the year than other members of its family.

Its range of distribution stretches from Spain and the UK over the southern parts of Europe into the Mideast and Central Asia (Altai). Its habitats are dry meadows above limestone. In Central Europe, the species is considered to be endangered.

Caterpillars are feeding on Hippocrepis comosa, Lotus corniculatus, Securigera varia, and other Fabaceae. The butterflies (or rather to say: day active moths) will appear in May together with the sweet smelling blossoms of wild privet (Ligustrum vulgare), and stay into July.

Much has been said on this site here before about the rather lazy behaviour and those conspicuous red, black and blue warning colours of burnets. A burnet's blood is said to contain cyanic acid, highly toxic to possible predators. Insect eating birds do avoid burnets.

We enjoy their colours.

SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 17mm macro-zoom setting (equiv. 110mm at conventional 35mm SLR), F/4, 1/160 sec., ISO-125, no tripod, no flash; 07.06.2008, 12:38. Sky overcast.

Hi Peter,

What a good close-up of this butterfly. Your image has an excelent DOF covering the whole body of the insect showing sharp details of it. Colors are vivid but natural looking and the contrast between main subject and background looks great.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hello Peter,
You look as you has an enjoyable and successful tour of the S. Austrian and Slovenian mountains. I was away with my son for only a week but it was very rewarding, especially as we had three days of sunshine, a rare event in the Swedish mountains!
This is an excellent macro of Z. loti: I very much like the composition on the grass head and the colours an d technical qualities are wonderful.
As I did not see our mountain species, Z. exulans, this is an excellent compensation!
Thanks and best wishes,
Ivan

Lieber Peter,
Anne

Hi, dear Peter.
Brilliant close-up shot of a fine sample of moths. Ultimate magnification, great diagonal composition and terrific details of the insect and ear. This combination of pictured objects is amazing as usual and at your picture especially. Extremely smooth green BG is a wonderful canvas for the subject. 3D-effect is the most impressive. Well done and Bravo. My heartfelt wishes.
Alexei.

Beautiful Peter!
I especially appreciate the head down diagonal comp.
Excellent work,
Howard

Hallo Peter!

Dear Peter!
I was not in Lodz last few weeks because of some trips, but please believe me - I am always like a lot to come back to your gallery to watch photos like this one.
Very colourful and beautiful capture. I am trying to take a picture of these moths last 3 years but all of them are rather bad (if I am lucky and insect doesn't fly away... ;>).
Sharp, detailed, and very nice composed image. And of course has an informative note :)
All the best from Lodz!
Friendly yours,
Radomir
