Icaro, Medick, and Vetch.

Plenty of rain in May and June created carpets of dense vegetation filled with blossoms even in the dry parts of eastern Austria in early summer this year.

Medicago lupulina (Linnaeus, 1753)
Medick / Hopfenklee

Medicago lupulina has very small yellow flowers grouped in tight bunches. A common flowering plant that is distributed through all of Europe, a great part of Asia, North Africa, Canaries, Madeira, North America, it is growing in dry limestone grounds and coastal sand dunes. It is a common sight in natural pastures, and a pleasant source of nectar.

Vicia angustifolia (Linnaeus, 1759)
Syn.: Vicia sativa ssp. angustifolia (Gaudin, 1829)
Narrow-Leaved Vetch / Schmalblättrige Wicke

Vetches are nitrogen fixing leguminous plants, often sown as fodder for cattle and horses, still growing wild in areas that have been taken out of cultivation since decades. They have also been part of early human diet as remains found at early Neolithic sites in Syria, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia tell us.

Both Medick and Vetches are favoured feeding plants for the caterpillars of various species of blue butterflies, like the one shown here. Some blues are hard to identify, and I often end up with mistaking the

Common Blue
Polyommatus icarus (Rottemburg, 1775)

for another species. Here, the undersides seemed to indicate Amanda’s Blue to me - but I was wrong. Ivan (Argus) just sent me a convincing documentation of P. amanda from Sweden for comparison. He considers my posting's butterfly to be a variation of P. icarus. I am grateful for his expert advice. Thank you, Ivan.

Hello Peter,
I can imagine the Alpine meadows after the rain although I expect many butterflies failed to emerge. This is a lovely colourful image that cheers me up on a dreadfully dark, stormy and rainy afternoon. I've just been out with our little dog and he was in a hurry to get back home!!
Excellent view of the Common Blue showing sharp details of the typical markings of the underside. Lovely colours of butterfly and flowers in this fine composition.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Bonjour Peter, c'est très rafraichissant ce cliché!! bravo pour les couleurs et la composition. Le pois de senteur rouge en haut de la photo est peut être de trop!! mes félicitations and Happy Christmas, Didier.

Hello Peter,
This is a very fine and technically excellent image, well composed with the Vetch and medic flowers to make it an attractive posting. To me it shows a variation of a male icarus. I have taken a fresh P. amanda that I overlooked in my archives and not posted before but I send it to the WS for you to compare and see if you agree with me. You notice that there are less orange marks on the amanda's hindwing and the narrow black wing border is less marked than that of icarus.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Best regards,
Ivan

Dear Peter,
It is no doubt a very well composed shot by you. The sharpness, details & colors are perfect. I like your notes on the subject. TFS.

Hi Peter,

Nochmals Frohe Festtage
Herzliche Grüsse
Anne

Very, very sharp and detailed.
Excellent soft light.
Great DOF.

Very well done,

Hallo Peter
An absolutely marvellous capture filled with a display of colour and feeling of absolute serenity. I cannot say which I like the most, the flowers or the butterfly. Both are really amazing but each has their own qualities to value. The patterns and markings on the wings of the butterfly is delightful and spectacular. The flowers appear sunny and bright. A great image with a fine arrangement of colours, which is a definite feast for the eye. Kind regards and thanks for sharing.
Best regards
Anna
I also want to thank you for adding me to your list of favourites. It is indeed a great honour receiving such a gesture from a gentleman and fine photographer like you. It is much appreciated and will be treasured.

Hello Peter,

One more time, you present us an excellent portrait of a small but so nice butterfly! The colors are natural and so nice to look at! I'm just wandering if you had closed a little bit more instead of using f/4, you should have been able to get both antennas in focus. The wing details are astonishing and the exposition perfectly mastered!

A great picture and a wonderful job!

TFS,

Michel

I was delighted to read your kind critique on my recent butterfly picture, Peter. Hope you are keeping well.
At this juncture, I also wish you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
In your image, we not only see a small butterfly in perfect focus but also numerous richly coloured flowers. The entire composition is so beautiful it lifts the spirit in these grey and dull days of winter.
Thanks for sharing this beauty and warm regards.
