Lilium bulbiferum.

A most rewarding and precious time to go up into the Alps is the month of June - in cool and rainy years as in 2008 that time might even stretch into mid July. A few days of cold weather will regularly bring back some snow to the peaks and give sheep, shepherds and hikers a hard time. But mountain meadows are in the best of full blossom and buzzing with life the moment the strong sun returns.

Fire Lily, Feuerlilie, Giglio di San Giovanni, lys orangé, brstična lilija - plus a lot of other well sounding popular names in Alpine valleys of Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland: such as Azla, Berg-Ilga, Donnerblume, Donnerrose, Fanzognia, Feldlilie, Fiur di San Giuan, Füür-Ilga, Gelbe Gilgen, Goldrose, Machola, Mosnbräse, Rot-Ilgä, Steirose, Tulipana, Wilde Gilgen.

Order: Liliales
Family: Liliaceae
Genus: Lilium
Species: Lilium bulbiferum (Linnaeus, 1758)

Stem: 60-120 cm, often hairy in upper third.

Leaves: scattered, lanceolate, up to 10 cm long. Often forming bulbils in upper leaf axils.

Flowers: solitary or 2-5, sometimes up to 20, 9-14 cm in diameter. Tepals yellowish-orange with brown spots, nectaries papillous. Stamens upward; filaments and pollen red.

Origin: mountain regions of Central Europe, Alps in particular, grassy slopes and open forests from the lowlands up to 2400m above sea level. Nowadays well known as a garden plant, the Fire Lily has become widely extinct or very rare in the wild, and therefore is delivering a most most spectacular sight - like here on a mountain meadow in Upper Austria near the village of Hinterstoder at an elevation of 1500m above sea level, in front of a limestone peak called "Spitzmauer".

Flowering time: May-July.

The Fire Lily's alpine race ssp. bulbiferum produces a lot of bulbils at the axils of leaves, enabling the plant to spread by clones as well as by seeds.

> The bulbils.

Unlike most other lilies, the Fire Lily does not produce any scent. But there seems to be a lot of nectar available even from the surface of petals. Butterflies may often be seen sitting and sucking there in a good distance from the centre of the blossom.

Hello Peter,
Nice to see you as my neighbour today! This is a wonderful view of the Alps in summer. I remember seeing this lovely Lily in the wild in Slovenia while here it is a popular garden flower. Lovely sharp capture with a flowering meadow and the Alps as a background. Beautiful colours and very well composed.
Many thanks and best regards, Ulla

Hola Peter.
Excelente primer plano.
Geniales colores y gran DoF.
Buen e interesante comentario.
Saludos, JL.

This is an amazing shot with that camera Peter (*received other thanks). there are two ways this image could have been shot...with distance in focus or not..but sometimes cameras will not allow for both under certain circumstances..HOWEVER this way it is imaged is much the better for the flowers sake. Should the background have been in focus it would have detracted and made the image too busy! In your presentation you have done it superbly with the slightly OOF backdrop leaving the flower to be the focal point yet not loosing the environmental altogether..Good show...

Lieber Peter,
Möchte so gern in Gedanken da oben verweilen.
Hab herzlichen Dank
Anne

Hallo Peter !
This is absolutely WONDERFUL ! These flowers are real beauties, I love their shape, their colors, and you managed to capture them with great details. The majestic mountains in the BG make them look even more beautiful. Vielen Dank !
Valerie.

Beautiful shot! The idea of keeping the mountin and sky in the bg with the backlit flower in the front is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Ciao Peter,
TFS.

Hi, dear Peter.
Once more my favorite subject and first-class picture with ultimate DOF and stunning BG. Charming flowers on a FG cannot be reproduced better. Very impressive lighting, colouration of the flowers and superb sharpness. Green flower carpet of the hills is amazing too and image of the snowy mountains is sweet. Bravo. Well done and my nest regards.
Alexei.

Nicely done, Peter.
You photograph flowers as you photograph butterflies through an extraordinary point of view combined with almost a semi-blurred landscape as background.
Well done

Beautiful sunny image Peter, the perfect cure for winter doldrums.
Love the DOF you achieve with your camera's sensor..
It makes this composition grand :)
Well done & Thank You!

Hello Peter.

This is truly amazing shot in tall frame with the flower captured in pristine sharpness and details. What is more interesting is how you have presented us with the beauty of the backdrop contrary to ordinary macro shot. Excellent framing with good depth. I like it and very well done indeed.

Jusni

Dear Peter,
This portrait of a Fire Lily would not be as good if the BG were totally OOF. Here you not only have a fine sharp capture of the flowers in superb lighting but a beautifully composed BG of the meadow whereit grows and the bare mountain ridge behind it.
A wonderful shot that I should have seen earlier and thanks for delighting us with it!
Best regards,
Ivan

Hello Peter,

nice shot of this flowers and the snowpeal on the bg.
Maybe the picture were even better with more or less dof.
Beautiful colours.

Dear Peter,
In these days of foggy chill and grey atmosphere here in Delhi, your picture of a high altitude meadow with those beautiful flowers in the foreground lifts my spirits and makes me ache for the joys of summers in the mountains.
I have also seen your workshop picture of a butterfly inside the petals of these lovely flowers and enjoyed it thoroughly.
It is a great pleasure to look at your work so very original, creative and artistic.
Thanks for this picture and also for visiting me.
Warm regards.
Ram

This photo is uplifting. The flowers seem to be praising something divine with their faces looking toward the heavens. Great depth of field, wonderful colors...another beautiful shot!

Lieber Peter!

Markus

What a gorgeous and refreshing scene, Peter! This image captures multiple seasons and color tones -- from the cloudy blue sky and snowy slopes to the warm tones of the flowers. I especially like the contrast of the orange flowers against the green meadow. I also like how the angle of the lilies fits nicely into the curve-line of the hills. Spending a summer in the Austrian Alps has just made my list of things to do before I die! :-)

Randy

Beautiful capture Peter, both foreground and background. Gradient filter would of brought down the brightness in the sky a bit as well as the snow highlights, but regardless this brings peace to mind when one observes this wonderful momment.

Hi Peter!
Very beautiful shot, with the Lilium in foreground and a lovely landscape as BG. The image is perfectly sharp and illuminated by a splendid light, which shows us the trasparence of the petals.
Very well done.
Ciao! Vanda.

Many thanks for your visit and nice comments.
I saw your Gallery: it's enviable :))

A gorgeous shot Peter. Your H5 really brought out the colours in both the background and the foreground. I love the number of layers there are to this and clouds to finish it off nicely. Well done! Trevor

Hi Peter, I like his idea very much to use the alps in Hinterstoder as a prop for the glorious Fire Lilly.

Unfortunately I cannot get at my literature at the moment to compare the European plant with the South African. But I am quite certain that the flower is similar, whereas the leaves quite different.

As soon as somebody climbs the bookshelves for me, I'll let you know...

The sharp details of the flower accentuate the deep colour and make it a pleasure to view your work. I add your photo to my theme "High Altitude" and thank you for your informative notes.

Greetings from the Tzaneen Dam min Limpopo, South Africa,
Gute Nacht

Ingrid

Hi Peter,
Breathtaking photo. Beautiful subject, colors and background, exceptional PoV. The fire lily is an extremely rare species in Hungary also, and I managed to find it only once - in 2008 also, like you did. Although your photo's much better, feel free to have a look on mine also.
Have a happy and prosperous new year, kindest regards from Éire, László
