Ilia and Lucanus.

Apatura ilia (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
Lesser Purple Emperor, Kleiner Schillerfalter, Petit Mars changeant, Ilia

Lucanus cervus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Stag beetle, Hirschkäfer, Lucane cerf-volant, Cervo volante

The humid deciduous forests of Rohrwald near Vienna are buzzing with life in these days. End of June is the time you should not miss there if you enjoy watching iridescent Emperor butterflies gathering in good numbers at wet spots. Giant stag beetles would also swarm there at sunset, creeping clumsily along the forest borders at daytime - particularly at weather conditions of sunshine, thunder and rain, as we are recently enjoying.

Finding both of them as closely together as here relaxing on an oak tree’s branch might be a rare coincidence, however, so I dare to show that quickly done aim & shoot documentary photo to you:

A male of Apatura ilia in its ochre variaton f. clythie (wing span approx. 65mm), and a well grown male stag beetle (its body length measuring about 75mm – antlers included). The ferocious looking beetle is totally harmless, using its giant antlers in rivalry fights only.

More details on the butterfly: Apatura ilia.

More details on the beetle: Lucanus cervus.

That is one great camera you use Peter and not or rather besides that...this opportunity does not come along very often.....most never see it...I may have but have forgotten. Well captured...Actually well seen by you in the first place!

Guten Morgen und Namaste, Peter!
It is a great pleasure to see your fresh picture after a fairly long gap of time.
The butterfly and the beetle lounging together on the shiny Oak leaves are beautifully captured as usual.
Though the antlers of the Stag Beetle look threatening by virtue of their size, your note sets all the fears at rest. The butterfly is quite safe in its company.
Your notes are always a great experience to go through. They are first hand and original and give a clear impression that it is a scholar at work here.
Here in Delhi, we are getting roasted in the heat almost literally. No monsoons so far and the prospects seem bleak.
Warm regards,
Ram

Hello Peter,
What an amazing capture!
To be able to photograph either ilia or the Stag beetle seperately are achievements but to have them both on the same picture would for me be a once-in-lifetime experience.
The good use of your compact camera show both species with excellent sharpness and great POV as they stand out so well against the oak leaves. WOW!!!
This has to be a favourite.
I see you have a lot of unsettled weather but there is sun too. We are having a drought here in Sweden.
Thanks and best regards,
Ivan

Hi Peter, dear friend.
What a fantastic subject and quality of the shot. All pictured objects are reflected with ultimate exactness and beautifulness: charming butterfly, amazing beetle and so wonderful leaves. Colours are awesome and solar patches of light on the leaf surface are sweet. Bravo. You simply must share your unique pictures here.
Yours Alexei.

Hello Peter,
What a fantastic combination of insects. And a good quality photo. Both are sharp and in clear colours. Excellent POV and beautiful contrasts on the leaves of the oak.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter
Great shot, fantastic moment. Sharppness and POV is great. I must say that for me it is also funny - butterfly and beetle on one photo - please take a look on my last photo. It is also a couple but the size is completely different ;-)
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Lieber Peter,

Markus

Hello Peter,

I was wondering what made Peter choose this composition :-) when i saw the tumbnail, but i was wrong when i looked at the bigger picture, you have a Stag beetle there. Good picture Peter and its nice to see you around here
