Cyprus Discovery presents to you the Sanderling. The Sanderling is one of the birds found in Cyprus. Its scientific name is Charadrius Calidris alba and its Greek name is Levkoskalidra. It is a small - medium size bird which its height is 16 - 20 cm. It has a wingspan of 38 - 42 cm. Sanderling eats a variety of aquatic invertebrates and sometimes carrion. This is the only sandpiper that lacks the hind toe, thus allows it to be a strong runner. When roosting, they usually stand on one leg, and if disturbed, they will hop away from the disturbance on one leg. It is a winter visitor to Cyprus. It is also found the period of migration in inhabit broad, coastal beaches with light-colored sand. They can also be found on gravelly and rocky beaches and mudflats and on the top of kelp beds.
