|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|I first saw an image like of a group of plovers reflected in the water, on the cover of a copy of a bird report in Nicosia and decided that I wanted to try to emulate this image. I often go to the sewage treatment works at Nicosia (Haspolat to the Turkish Cypriots, Mia Milia to the Greeks Cypriots)and had noted groups of plovers standing on small patches of mud on the settling pans.|
This image was captured towards the end of the day when the sun had dropped low, and followed an earlier series I had tried in which the birds were just too dark and back lit. I had borrowed a friends EOS 7D to try out in place of my 1Ds and had it coupled to my 100-400is lens. With the 1.6 crop factor of the 7D this gave a focal length of 640mm at F8, and I had selected an ISO of 100ASA with -1/3 exposure compensation.
The shot was hand held resting on the window frame of the car we were using as a hide. I like the fact that three of the four birds are facing the same way, and the fourth is looking forward.
I would have liked to get a catch light in the eyes of the birds, but the light just wasn't quite right.
I have been really impressed with the 7D body for this kind of work.
The Spur Winged Plover, Vanellus spinosus, is a common bird at this site, where it breeds and remains into the autumn, but it is flighty and difficult to get close to.
In the Autumn and winter the numbers build up and it is common to see fairly large groups together. I am not sure if these birds are a family group but they were sticking together. It is a partial migrant and migrant breeder in Cyprus, but is recorded in every month of the year.

superb shot. Excellent focus and colors, you shot it at good time, very very well done
thank you.Best regards.
Lovely and poetic capture Phil. I like a lot the effect of the "white water" here. It makes the subjects to stand almost suspended in the air. Very graphical and cool shot indeed. Bravo!

A fine capture of a group of Spur-winged Plovers. It must be rare to see 4 together in the Med. region.
The sharpness and light management are superb with their relcetions in the water a nice bonnus.
Thanks and kind regards,
Great capture, very well composed, with very peaceful atmosphere. Interesting note too (about the 7D and about Cyprus birding). Have a nice Sunday,

Colours,light and focus are excellent.
C'est très artistique et bien composé dans une lumière bien maitrisée.
