Acrocephalus arundinaceus (Linnaeus 1758)
Great Reed Warbler (catching a male Crocothemis erythraea (Brullé 1832))

Acrocephalus arundinaceus, is a passerine bird in the family Sylviidae (Old World warblers).
It is a large thrush-sized warbler, 16–20 cm in length. The adult has unstreaked brown upperparts and dull buffish-white chin and underparts. The forehead is flattened, and the bill is strong and pointed. It looks very much like a giant Eurasian Reed Warbler (A. scirpaceus), but with a stronger supercilium. The sexes are identical, as with most warblers, but young birds are richer buff below.
A. arundinaceus breeds in Europe and westernmost temperate Asia. It is a migratory species, wintering in tropical Africa.
This is a species found in large reed beds. On their breeding grounds, they are territorial. In their winter quarters, they are frequently found in large groups. It is insectivorous, but it will take other prey items of sufficiently small size, even including vertebrates.

In Cyprus A. arundinaceus is an uncommon passage migrant in spring and autumn. Breeding has occasionally been attempted, the last being in 1985.

Hi Christodoulos,

This picture is very impressive as your entire gallery.
I can see you take nature photography very seriously and the results are grate.
I am also impressed of your competence as bird watcher and your knowledge about birding spots and sightings on your island.
I hope to see Cyprus sometime time – it looks very interesting through your lens.
What is your magic 400mm lens? Do you use a support of some sort or your shots are hand held?

Regards, Mario
