Phoenicopterus roseus Pallas 1811
Greater Flamingo

Phoenicopterus roseus (family Phoenicopteridae) is the largest species of flamingo averaging 110–150 cm (43–60 in) tall. It is also the most widespread species of the flamingo family. It is found in parts of Africa, southern Asia (coastal regions of Pakistan and India), and southern Europe (including Spain, Sardinia, Albania, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, and the Camargue region of France).
According Wikipedia Phoenicopterus roseus is closely related to the American Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo, with which it has sometimes been considered conspecific, but that treatment is now widely seen (e.g., by the American and British Ornithologists' Union) as incorrect and based on a lack of evidence.
Most of the plumage of Phoenicopterus roseus is pinkish-white, but the wing coverts are red and the primary and secondary flight feathers are black. The immature plumage is white with darker shaft-streaks and dark – tipped wing-covers.

In Cyprus it is a common passage migrant and a common winter visitor. Up to 10000 flamingos winter mainly at the two salt-lakes of the island (Akrotiri and Larnaka).

In the photo two immature birds at Zakaki area near Akrotiri salt-lake.

Fine formation of these two birds, wish some pink there, this looks like an abstract image. tfs.

Hello Christodoulos,

You're capturing well this twin birds by a good angle and excellent tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see two elegant birds overlapping. It's impressive that this bird has long leg and neck as well as elegant colors, too. And, you catch well the moment bird is drinking water. This is a photo with very high quality, I think.

Hallo Christodoulos
This is the kind of image that I like. It is true to nature, captured without pretence, does not look as if the birds are posing for you and just as it supposed to be. I like the soft light in the image. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Simplemente, admirable.

How unusual to see flamingos that are not pink.
I see from your notes that it is because they are immature.
But that is still an odd sight.
A great composition.
Thanks for sharing, Chris.

Hi Chris,
What a fantastic composition with the two immature flamingos! No empty and superfluous space on the pic, just simply the birds and a little piece of blurry background. Excellent crop! Perfect sharpness as well, and the birds' pose with their curved necks is something really pleasant as view. Exceptional image! Bravo!
Best regards, László
