The African Softshell Turtle or Nile Softshell Turtle, is a large species of turtle from fresh water and brackish habitats in Africa (larger parts of East, West and Middle Africa) and the Near East (Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey). It is the only species from the genus Trionyx, but in the past many other softshell turtles were placed in this genus. They have now been moved to various other genera. Despite the name African softshell turtle, it is not the only species of softshell turtle in Africa (Cyclanorbis and Cycloderma are also African).
In Israel this species exist only in one river (Alexander) after this river went a thorough purification.

a wonderful species. good closeup. thanks for sharing.

great turtle capture, dash Ori

Hi Lior,

this must be a once-in-a-lifetime shot, Lior! My compliments. I knew of its existence in Euphrat, but despite my search for traces I never sighted anything like this. In the US I held a Soft shell turtle in the garden pond but the animal was ferocious and could bite you. My compliment to this awesome portrait.

Best regards
