[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is Israel’s rarest orchid, found in just a few locations in the Galilee and Golan, and with only one stable population not threatened by grazing, of about 20 specimens, close to the top of Mt. Meron (1208 m), the Land of Israel’s highest peak west of the Jordan River. The genus name means: “strap-like tongued”. The very long labellum, 7 cm here, resembles a lizard’s forked tongue, thus the English name, Lizard orchid. In stating the species’ name here I took the liberty of referring to it by the unofficial (yet?) name “galilea”, because it has been shown by my friend and orchid enthusiast extraordinaire, Asaf Shifman, that this particular Himantoglossum is quite different from H. affine or A. caprinum, as referred to this one of others.
