|"Skinks are medium sized lizards, often with shiny or iridescent scales ans reduced legs... these handsome lizrads dive beneath the surface of the sand and "swim" through the sand by lateral undulations of their powerful bodies..." - The Emirates, A natural History.|
On a field trip into the desert near Buraimi on the UAE border, we drove though some lovely desert scenery and stopped under some trees near the dunes. Walking around on the dunes we spotted this skink, scurrying along looking for food. He didn't seem to be too perturbed by us and we watched for a few minutes until he suddenly dived into the soft sand. a few moments leter he re-emerged some distance away from where he had disappered, and scurried again.
It was quite difficult to get a shot because he was not about to stand and pose for us.
I did the shot on RAW, and my software won't let me save it as a Jpeg with the photo information, so i've uploaded what i got from the camera.
Hope you enjoy this skink as much as we did watching disappear into the sand!

Interesting creature which you show us here. Amazing colours for this desert lizard. I can imagine it "swimming" in the sand.

Great moment and capture of this skink. If it wasn't for his white belly, you could hardly see him in the sand. But I see in your note that he disappeared into the sand, so I guess you did loose track of him al together :-) The colours are very beautiful. Good sharpness and composition. I like it, thanks for sharing!
