GREY HYPOCOLIUS

Friends, I feel happy to upload today the second picture of Grey Hypocolius by way of my 300th post.

While I was trying to shoot this solitary bird on the 9th of February from the living room window of my hospitable neighbour, I was a bit shaken by the tone of the bird's forlorn catlike mewing call, hardly aware at that time it was a lonely female mate call.
She has been visiting our trees off and on, all alone.

For almost a week now, I have not seen her around. Maybe she has already left for western Iran across the Arabian Gulf after wintering here in Riyadh for the next breeding season.

Now that I know who she was, I will miss her.

By way of a note, I quote another paragraph from an article related to the taxonomy of Grey Hypocolius:

"The Hypocolius is a very mysterious bird taxonomically. Lowe (1947) pointed to Old World chat-like characters and thought it was a thrush. From the 1950s through 1980s, however, it was usually considered either a subfamily in the Waxwing [Bombycillidae] group, along with silky-flycatchers and the Palmchat (e.g., Cramp 1988), or a monotypic family that was closely related to those taxa. Recent work grounded in biochemical evidence, however, hasn't yet helped much since no DNA-DNA hybridization data were available when Sibley & Ahlquist (1990) & Sibley & Monroe (1990) were published. They, however, suggested it was closer to the Bulbuls [Pycnonotidae] although "affinities uncertain." In his 4th ed. checklist, Clements (1991) didn't seem to know quite what to do. He put Hypocolius near bulbuls but had them separated the White-eyes [Zosteropidae]. From our brief field experience, this bird reminds me of a bulbul. Like many bulbuls it is primarily a fruit eater, and structurally it reminds me of that group. I will not be surprised to learn that biochemical evidence eventually shows it closely related to bulbuls. I do not think it is at all like a waxwing, or a silky-flycatcher, or the Palmchat. It does not seem to belong to that loose grouping".

The article is a very interesting account of an expedition's search for this bird in the UAE. For full article, please follow the link below.

Hello Ram,
Congratulations on your 300th post and this second post of the rare and remarkable Grey Hypocolius is an excellent way of celebrating the occasion. Like your first post of this species, the image has the quality of an Audobon bird painting: the pose, the subtle tints of colour, the composition and sharpness.
First class! I think your shots of the Hypocolius are unique on TN: another cause for celebration!
Best wishes, Ivan

Congratulations on your 300th post and I must say that you have chosen an excellent subject: a bird as rare as you are.

Hi Ram and congratulations from the bottom of my heart for such an amazing number of posts!

This too (just like the other one) is a splendid shot of this lovely Grey Hypocolius.
The diagonal composition you have achieved here is just terrific and the details on the bird are charming.
The exposure is very well managed and the light intensity and contrast are great.
Splendid work once more, my friend.

Cheers, TFS and a great weekend!

A lovely composition - almost a painting - subtle greens and yellows - it seems to move. Even so the bird stands out well.

Hello Ram,
Quite a composition here: tight and the hypocolius is diagonally place, from one corner to the other. Definitely no real estate wasted. I like it a lot. The color palette is also interesting. The bird is almost an extension of the leaf. Well done.
Congratulations on the 300th!

Hi Ram

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S Mr. Ram D. Thakur from Himachal Pradesh, currently from Riyadh in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. At least now that I have identified the right honourable man I suppose I can get on with the rest of my comments (chuckle).

This last year and a bit went past so fast and no wonder because you were one of the cardinal people to entertain me (TN) with such excellent and outstanding material to view on an almost daily basis. To post 300 photos in 399 days means that you uploaded a photo every 1.33 days. Quite an astonishing feat to accomplish if one consider that each of these postings were accompanied by a normally extensive account relating to the subject, technical information, personal observations, interesting and useful research material, nostalgic remembrances, anecdotes, etc. As if this was not enough there were also 5408 critiques, numerous wise and thoughtful replies to critiques, 51 workshops, and an abundant number of forum participations. So, who can argue the entertainment value and the significance of killing time by such an impressive contribution? Don't you ever have some school papers to review or exams to mark (chuckle)? All I can say is thank you Ram and please do continue in this remarkable fashion without stop. It is an honour and a privilege to be able to call you one of my dear TN friends.

Oh yes, before I forget, I like this shot of the very interesting Grey hypocolius - Hypocolius ampelinus. This little bird has to do some precision flying judging by the sharp spikes on the base of this palm leaf. It looks like she was all eyes only for you. You must have had your suit on (ha-ha). It seems like these two shots of the "hypocolius" which you posted on TN are the only ones on the site which place it in the "Rare and Significant Contribution" category. This sure beats flies & cockroaches...nah, just pulling your leg, for you had some "lovely" fly & cockroach shots.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. This just gave me an excellent idea of a new theme so this rarity will be the first entrée.

Hi dear Ram ,
great image with well composed.
excellent sharpness and nice BG.
nice frame.
very well done
thanks and regards

Hi Ram,
Contratulations for both the big 300th post and the wonderful bird you post in this occasion. Really smart figure, awesome colours and a nice pose and composition.

Hi Ram,
congtats on your 300th post, waiting for nest 300.
THe light and colours are lovely. I like the
diagonal composition, it's very nice.
Well done, my friend.

Hello Ram,
This is an impressive number of pictures and I'm very glad that your 300th is A BIRD :) It is a nice way to celebrate as this bird is so interesting and rare :) This is again a beautiful capture with nice exposure, colors, POV and composition. Your little "girl friend" is looking directly at you to wish you many more pictures. I hope that she'll be back and that you can photograph her again, she is so nice and I’m glad that you finally found it’s ID.

Thanks for your great contribution to this site, your sensibility and generosity. I'm looking forward to your next 300th ;) Thanks!
Claudine
:)...

wow, new bird in TN, thanks very much for this. Ori

Dear Ram, I would like to add my congratulations. After all doing 300 shots on TN is quite an accompishment, especially when on average you have garnered almost 30 points per shot.

As to this particular beauty - I mean the bird - it is an excellent capture.

As to presentation I find there is something missing. The bird's colours almost completely blend in with the surroundings... that is possible of course, but as this is the Grey Hypocolius I would expect to see evidence of the grey Your third shot of this bird DOES in fact show more grey... It - that third one - would have been a better shot except for the pose .

All the best, ma a'salama, Jay

PS I think your ID is 100% correct; see confirmation; also:
""The bird is not especially rare, but the political difficulties in getting into and around any of the countries in its range are formidable.""

Congratulations for your 300th post. It's a very elegant composition, both in colours and shapes. Nice light too. There is some noise visible but doesn't spoil the picture.

An amazing photo! She blends into the background so well, looking like one of the palms she is perched upon. The colours and clarity are so perfect that you could nearly touch and feel the bird.

Wonderful shot for a 300th posting!
