Levantine Leopard is a small butterfly with a wingspan of 25-35 mm and two characteristic tails of uneven length on the hindwing.

The upperside ground colour of the male is orange with brown bars. The underside ground colour is pale white with brown bars. The bars are enhanced with a dark brown border and a silver central line.
The female is similar to the male but is usually larger in size.

It is known from the Middle East, Turkey, Iraq, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. I am not sure exactly but I think this is the 1st record of the presence of the species in Syria. The adult butterflies start to emerge in May and are on the wing until the beginning of November. It is bivoltine species, the first generation from the end of May until the middle of June, and the second generation from the middle of July to the beginning of September. Observations in October and November indicate the possibility of a third, smaller brood.

Levantine Leopard is one of the butterflies that have not been positively associated with a host-plant though in captivity eggs have been laid on the woody parts of Sarcopoterium spinosum (Thorny Burnet). Eggs are laid near colonies of Crematogaster ants. The caterpillars spend much of their time' in ants' nests and have been bred in later instars inside artificial nests with no access to plants, living on ants' brood. Indications are that, at least under certain circumstances, the caterpillars might spend their entire life cycle in the ants' nests.

Levantine Leopard is rare and local butterfly. It is recorded in pine forests, on agricultural land, sparse maquis, garigue and phrygana from sea level to 900 m. Prefers phrygana on degraded, clay-like ground with small bushes, mostly of Thorny burnet and various herbaceous plants. Perches on top of small bushes, dried grass and sometimes on rocks. Not easily put to flight, even if closely approached. It has a fast and erratic flight and often returns to its original perch. Although it rarely visits flowers it is attracted to those of Chrozophora and Cardopatium species, as well as the thistles Echinops spinosissimus and Carlina involucrata .

Good morning Bayram Dostum!
A nice macro of a female Levantine leopard, an oriental species of Lycaenid that I have not seen before and one that is probably new to TN.
Excellent sharpnress, and lighting showing her features while resting with her wings closed.
Thanks and have a good day MF,
Ivan

Hallo Bayram
This is a beautiful specimen with prominent markings and lovely colours and you have captured it well. I really find the silver streaks on the wings beautiful, especially when the shine reflects back at you. Your images images are always such a pleasure to look at as they always display with grace and elegancy, this Levantine Leopard no exception. I like the composition and the angle in which you captured this beauty. The camerawork here is great. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Dear Bayram,
Very nice and warm capture of this pretty Lycanid. Incredible sharpness. With your present and future observation in Syria, I'm sure you will contribute to make know the rich fauna of this country. I readed that Cyprus is the only Mediterranean island where this species is present (rare). Congratulations! İyi akşamlar SA,
Cathy
