Russian Heath

Turkish Name: Rus Zıpzıp Perisi Kelebeği

Distribution in Turkey: South-western Anatolia, Central Anatolia, North-eastern Anatolia and Eastern Anatolia.

Distribution in the world: Southeast Europe. The Balkan peninsula from Northern Greece to Romania and Moldavia. It is further recorded in southern Russia and parts of Asia and across Transcaucasia to Turkey and Iran.

Living Area: 800-2500 meters altitude, inhabits nutrient-poor grasslands, grassy slopes and pastures especially near the woodland or near to scrub.

Flight time: One generation. Mid-May to early-August between the months of flies.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars various grasses, including genera Poa, Melica, Anthoxanthum, Lolium plants grow with the fed.

Description-Notes: Type Location: Volga region, Russia. A medium-sized butterfly. A rare butterfly. May have one or two subapical eyespots on forewing. The lower band edge of the bright orange under the rear wing is orange and silver color is limited to the sideline. Central external link, yellow spot sequence. Apex may be one or two six-spot under the front wing. Bordered outside by a bright orange submarginal band and a silver marginal line line. Larvae hibernating.

Wingspan: 32-40 mm long.

The origin of the name: "Leander (Greek mythology) - Leander, a young man from Arbidosa, swam across the Hellespont every night for a meeting with the hero" (Nekrutenko, 1990).
