[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
On my travels in Turkey:
One of my most enjoyable days was when I visited the 1'000 year-old Armenian monastery church (Սուրբ խաչ, Surb Chatch) on Akdamar island in Van gölü (= Van lake, see "Map"). You notice the church to the right of the picture. In the background you have one of the three volcanoes that are visible from the lake, Süphan dağı (4'058 m).

Van gölü, situated in Eastern Turkey is 120 km long, 80 km wide and 457 m deep, situated at 1'719 m a.s.l. The lake has been created in Pleistocene times by blocking the water outlet with lava flows from volcano Nemrut. Therefore it is not the "source of Tigris" as earlier geographers had postulated. The water is slightly salty, alkaline (pH 9.8). There is only one fish species to be found, Chalcalburnus tarichi ( İnci kefali), which seeks river inlets for spawning.

It is hard to imagine why this peaceful and mountainous region has seen so many conquerors in its history. But the region is of course a gateway between Central Asia and Europe. J. W. Goethe in his "Faust I" (published in 1808) has this awful phrase: "Nichts Bessers weiss ich mir an Sonn-und Feiertagen, als ein Gespräch von Krieg und Kriegsgeschrei, wenn, hinten, weit, in der Türkei, die Völker aufeinander schlagen."

If your plans are to join Teheran by rail, starting from Europe, you will cross Van lake on a railway ferry!

Hallo Dietrich
This is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful to look at. The different shades of blue in this image are lovely, vivid and very striking. This is a wonderful piece of landscape you share with us today. It must have been wonderful to see it in real, because where I am now it is awesome. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Lieber Dieter,
Wer eine Reise tut, kann etwas erzaehlen (keine Ahnung, WER das gesagt hat :-)). Du erzaehlst in einer hervoragenden Weise mit Deinen Bildern.

Zusaetzlich verwoehnst Du TrekNature Mitglieder mit Deinen ausfuehrlichen, well researched Notes.

The scene is reminiscent of South America, und St Peter half Dir auch mit einigen Wolken, um das Bild vollstaendig zu machen.

Herzliche Gruesse von Sued Africa
Beste Wuensche fuer eine gute Woche
Ingrid
