.......Vernacular Names
Although I am a biologist, I like to etymology too; especially species names' origin (derivatio nominis). Latin names are usually originated from
- a morphological feautures, e.g. dark colored (fuscus), short headed (breviceps), three striped (trilineata), white-collared (albicollis).
- site or place, e.g. from Turkiye (turcicus), Anatolia (anatolica), Egypt (aegyptiacus), Caspian Sea (caspica), the south (australis), the Caucasus (caucasica), live in field (agricola),
- from human (collector or scientist etc) name, e.g. Curt Kosswig (kosswigi), Abidin Budak (budaki), Fazıla Ş. Giz (fazilae).
- from tautonomy (same word of genus name), e.g. Bufo bufo, Myotis myotis
- from anagram, e.g. from unedo from "Unom tantum edo [eat only one]", isodol from Niyazi Lodos.

- As I know, the shortest name belongs to a bat from SE Asia: Ia io.
However, some vernacular names are derivated from wrong names. For example Muscicapa striata's is Spotted Flycatcher. Actually this bird is striped, not spotted (attention please striata = striped). Similarly Larus ridibundus is named as Black-headed Gull. Actually this gull has a dark brown head, not black-head. True black-headed gull is Larus melanocephalus - Akdeniz Martısı [TR], Mediterranean Gull [TR] on enclosed photograph. Its scientific (Latin) name already refers its black [melano] head [cephalus].

This gull has a black head only in breeding season. Its head white, except small part on ear area, in winter. This species can be also recognized by white wing from L. ridibundus with black colored wing tips.

This shot was taken from Büyük Çekmece Lake in İstanbul City, by camera on hand. RAW to JPEG and heavly cropped.

Günaydin Ahmet,
A fine in-flight capture of Larus melancephalus, using a very good panning technique to take it with fine sharpness. That you did this with your heavy lens hand-held is to be admired!
This species is very rare in Sweden
This nice shot is accompanies by a fine note on the etymology of names, that I also fine fascinating.
Thanks for sharing both the fine image and the note my friend.
Have a good weekend,
Ivan

Assalamualaikum Akhi Dr. Ahmet,
such a beautiful capture of this bird in flight. The red beak and the black neck is very attractive. you have shown it in a great way by having the shadows, the details and also the eyes in clarity.
I could imagine its difficulties and patience you have experience in producing this pleasant shot.
Well presented.

Foozi
