Zerynthia polyxena , (Denis&Schiffermüller, 1775)
The Southern Festoon
Turkish Name: Güneyli Fisto Kelebeği
Distribution in Turkey: Usually in the north, the Black Sea and the Marmara coast were observed. Mainly wet meadows near woodland and open woodland with heavy undergrowth.
Distribution in the world: Southern France over Italy and eastwards to Slovakia, Austria, Greece covering all the Balkan peninsula , Turkey . Ukraine, Kazakhstan and the Southern Urals.
Living Area: Mostly it is below around 1000 meters. Sunny slopes of and foothills. Mainly wet meadows near woodland and open woodland with heavy undergrowth; sometimes near cultivated areas.
Flight time: During the year, one generation develops. Mid-March to late April in low-lying areas ; Late May June at higher altitudes.
Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Aristolochia sp-(Birthwort) plants are fed up with.
Description-Notes: Type locality : Wien. While flying butterflies, but this type is very similar to other white butterflies flying more irregular. On the edges of the hindwings they have a series of blue and red warning spots to deter potential predators. The basic color of the wings is yellow. Extremely wavy black submarginal lines on both wings give a strongly scalloped look. Broad black bars extend across the width of forewing cell. Note the two red bars within forewing cell.> The body is dark brown and bears red patches on the sides of the abdomen. The females have slightly longer wings, usually lighter colored than males.
Wingspan: 50-60 mm long.
The origin of the name: In Greek mythology, Polyxena (Greek: Πολυξένη) was the youngest daughter of King Priam of Trojan and his queen, Hecuba. Trojan story. Achilles, Polyxena married ..
Endangerment : Endangered.
Endangerment factors: Zerynthia polyxena is more and more endangered due to the loss of mesophilic, extensively managed open land and edges (intensification, overbuilding, bush encroachment, afforestation) and the few remaining wetlands, especially in the peripheral.
