Archon apollinus - Yalancı Apollo [TR], False Apollo [EN] is a very beautiful and small-medium butterfly from the family PAPILIONIDAE (LEPIDOPTERA), with a wingspan of 4.5-5.5 cm. The male is more pallid than the female with more reddish parts of wings.
It has been known from east of Europe; Greece and Turkiye, and also Irak, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and Syria. In Turkiye, it has been recorded almost all provinces, with exception of some northern and most eastern provinces. However, it can be seen in March-April in coastal zones, whereas in April-June in inlands. It lives in open sites in forests, bushy and rocky biotops located between sea level and 1100 m a.s.l.
The larvae feed on plants of the genus Aristolochia (PIPERALES: ARISTOLOCHIACEAE); e.g. A. poecilantha, A. parviflora, A. bodamae, A. hirta, A. bottae, A. auricularia, A. rotunda, A. sempervirens, A. maurorum, and A. billardieri.
Its Turkish populations represent three subspecies:
...- A. apollinus apollinus: Most populations
...- A. apollinus lorsteri: endemic in Kastamonu Province.
...- A. apollinus nikodemusi: İstanbul (endangered form and it has not seen for last three years.

Derivatio nominis [Etymology]: The genus name "Archon (Gr. ἄρχων, pl. ἄρχοντες)" is a Greek word that means "ruler" or "lord", frequently used as the title of a specific public office. I am not sure origin of the species name "apollinus". It can be derivated from Apollonius of Perga, who was famous geometer and astronomer noted for his writings on conic sections. Similarly, the crater Apollonius on the Moon is named in his honor.

Dear Ahmet!

The picture you present us today shows a beautiful butterfly that was unknown to me. I'm glad to discover it through such a nice picture. It reflects the butterfly's characteristics very well and the fact that wings are spread out allows the viewer to get a superb overall impression.

Kind regards

Markus

Ahmet bey selamlar,

A fine specimen in soft contours, in great contrast to its environment Ahmet, but still able to camouflage itself rather nicely! Well, this is pure nature for you MF...
Mehmet

Merhaba Ahmet.
A nice capture of a fresh specimen of a male A. apollinus, a species that brings memories to me of a trip to Antalya 22 years ago!
The dorsal POV shows its features with fine sharpness and colours while it is sunning itself on the ground.
Great to see this dostum!
Tesekkür ve eline saglik,

Ivan
