[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Sorry I'm a little late in uploading my note on this specimen. These are the calcareous "houses" of a Cirripedia colony, which belong to the crustaceans under the phylum Arthropoda. In English these interesting members of the "joint-footed invertebrates" are summarily known as "barnacles". In early larval stage, they are free swimmers, but quite early in their development, they become attached (via their antennae!) to a hard substratum and prison themselves within these hard shells which they secrete from special glands and from then on lead a sessile life, filtering plankton and detritic nutrients from the sea with their cirrus-like legs (hence their name, Cirripedia). As a substratum they sometimes choose the hard shell of a marine turtle, or the tough hide of a whale or the underwater parts of a ship, so while sessile organisms,could accomplish a distribution Worldwide.
The present specimen was obtained from a shell-dealer and photographed under the diffused light of two photospots, one two meters to the right and the other three meters to the left. Again, a dark BG was chosen.

Bu örnekle ilgili notlarımı yüklemekte geciktiğim için özür dilerim. Bunlar Arthropoda şubesi altında krustaselere dahil olan bir sirriped (kılsı-ayaklılar) kolonisinin kalkerden yapılmış "evleri". Bu eklembacaklı omurgasızlar ülkemizde Türkçe adlarıyla pek bilinmiyorlar, bilimsel kitaplarda bile bunlardan "midyeler" şeklinde bahsedenler hala çıkıyor! Bunlar, erken larva evrelerinde serbestçe yüzerler ama gelişmelerinin hayli erken bir döneminde kendilerini sert bir zemine (antenlerinden!) tespit eder ve özel salgıbezlerinden salgıladıkları bu kavkılar içine kendilerini hapsederek bundan böyle sabit bir yaşam sürerler, kılsı bacaklarıyla deniz suyundan süzdükleri plankton ve detritik maddelerle beslenirler. Bazen sert bir zemin olarak bir deniz kaplumbağasının sert kabuğunu, bir balinanın köselemsi derisini ya da bir geminin su altında kalan herhangi bir kısmını seçerler ve hareketsiz organizmalar olmalarına rağmen tüm Dünyaya yayılmayı da becerirler. Kavkı piyasasından temin edilen bu örneğin makrofotosu biri sağda 2 m mesafede, diğeri solda 3 m mesafede iki dağıtıcılı fotospotun ışığı altında, yine koyu geriplan tercih edilerek çekildi.

A beautiful capture of this barnacle. I have seen some what similar like these at the sea beach. At that time I didn't have any camera with me. But I will definitely try to capture these next time I go to a sea beach. Excellent composition and details. Thanks a lot for sharing.
