This, my friends, is a small specimen of a stone coral colony, Cladocora cespitosa, collected by hand while snorkelling from a depth of 5-6 meters, offshore of Limanreis district on the Outer Bay of Izmir, the bottom was pebbly-rocky. Cladocora cespitosa is the only hermatypic coral to be found in the temperate waters of the Mediterranean-Aegean seas system. This type of coral contains some symbiotic algae (Zooxanthellae) and contribute to reef building. The greenish-yellowish tinge seen on some parts of this specimen is the remains of the symbiote. However, while being a member of the Favidae family that is so important to the reefs of the Atlantic Ocean and the Indo-Pacific seas, atypically this species does not form reefs, it builds colonies up to 50 cm in size on rocky-stony bottoms within the lower infralittoral zone, in depths from 1 to 70 meters. The whitish calcareous skeleton (actually made of aragonite crystals) seen here is built by the ectoderm of brownish polyps basal disc, thus, as the colony grows, this skeleton is continuously deposited beneath each polyp. The calyxes (hollow openings where each polyp lives) are about 1 cm across and have characteristic longitudinal ribbings on the exterior. Side buds, which grow out of the base of the existing polyp increase the colony size.
To photograph this specimen, a single diffused spot two meters to the right was used with a contra-placed crinkled aluminum folio as a passive reflector, a single, small naked bulb was placed behind the specimen to demonstrate the translucent character of the thin parts of the skeleton and to highlight its edges. As usual, a dark BG was chosen.

Hello Mehmet,
nice and impressive colors and structures.
It's a specific light which I do not fully understand, in particular the bright part on the right
in connection with the generally bright border.
Did you use light from behind, in addition?
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Mehmet, stunningly beautiful coral, really fine focus showing the structure and details..TFS regards h

Hi Mehmet,
Thanks for the detailed note. I am now fully satisfied. Believe me, I had not the slightest interest in this field of natural studies but your pictures with your erudite notes have now led me into this amaziing realm as an avid learner.
This Coral is so incredibly beautiful.

Hello Mehmet,
You're certainly a great expert on studio photography, and this is a fascinating view of a stone coral. For my taste it looks a bit too artificial in its bright colours and against the black background, I'd really prefer a more natural look. I prefer your note to the photograph this time! :-)
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hello Mehmet,
Unusual presentation of this species of Mediterranean coral, unusual because of the lighting, a clever way of emphasising the external structure that would otherwise be less obvious with normal studio lighting. This, coupled with your very informative note makes a visit to this posting an educative pleasure and I thanks you for that!
Thanks also for choosing my Blue Tit image as a favorite!
Best wishes, Ivan

What is it? May be is it model of human brain? Superb colouration. Lighting and details. I am amazed with wide DOF and skill composition. Bravo.

Hello Mehmet,
This is the first time I am coming across a gallery in TN where u can find all kinds of shells and corals.:) Each of them very skilfully presented to show off its beautiful intricate patterns and a very good notes attached to it. This is also no exception. Splendid shot, with good focus, sharpness, POV and exposure. i liked the way you have used lights to accentuate its beauty and luminosity.
Thanks for the share,
Smitha.

Mehmet,
This looks beautiful, but I feel you should not have cropped it, you've shaped it like a Human skull! So I dont know whether I like it or hate it!
Cheers!
