MERHABA DOSTLARIM,
Again, I would like to introduce you to a member of the rich Muricidae family of gastropods, Rock or Dye shells widespread throughout the seas and oceans, but especially numerous in shallow tropical seas. These are solid shelled, active, carnivorous snails preferring a rocky or gravelly bottom in moderately shallow water. They usually prey on other molluscs by boring a hole through their shells using their rasp-like radulae, and then eating the contents.
The present specimen is a shell of Haustellum haustellum, sometimes named as the Mouse Murex because of its unique shape, also known as Snipe's bill Murex and Woodcock Murex, a denizen of the Indo-Pacific region. Its spire is very low and compressed, with a pointed apex. The almost closed anterior siphonal canal is very long and slender, the "tail" of the "mouse". Each whorl of the shell bear three varices (singular: varix, an earlier margin such as a kind of rib of the aperture, a prominent raised longitudinal rib on the surface of a snail shell caused by a periodic thickening of the outer apertural lip during rest periods in shell growth), and there are usually three axial ribs between varices (as seen on the last -body- whorl). Blunt spines or protuberances can be seen where ribs cross sharply angled whorl shoulders. Three or four rows of spiral nodules on ribs are usually present on the anterior half of the body whorl.
This macro photo was taken under unilateral daylight, open shade conditions, a small matt-white cardboard passive reflector was contra placed to provide a weak fill-in light. The specimen was placed over a black BG.

Hi Mehmet. Now this is a different one. Such a unusual shape and beautiful colours. It looks like a hat pin the women used a long time ago. Beautiful detail against the black BG. well done TFS.
Nick..

nice-special shell, greetings Ori

Merhaba Mehmet,
TFS.
Maurizio

Merhaba Mehmet, thanks for this fantastic shell, great macro with lovely details and splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Mehmet,

Another beautiful shell with wonderful colors and details. Shows of so well against the black background. I love the diagonal composition. It looks like a weapon so I'm not surprised it stabbed other mollusks.

Hi Mehmet

Lovely capture of this murex - I think the common name here is 'Snipe's Bill Murex' - if you put it on your finger it looks like the head and bill of a snipe - I am no expert, so it may be a similar species! Great shot however.

Hello Mehmet! A fine addition to your gallery, great details and colors. I really like the forms of this one, very nice. Well done again!

Old...I wonder if it was used by ancient ones as a tool..Certainly has a weapon like appearance....I remember the old Disney movie of 30 years ago..20 thousand leagues..in which they wear helmets made of shells..Dreaming on the reality..it takes a man of fantasy..which I am...I see deeper into the science than most..

Merhaba Mehmet,
A fine portrait of this remarkable species of Murex with good sharpness on the main body of the shell and excellent use of ambient light. One wonders about the purpose of the long siphonal canal: probably an aid to get at the half-buried prey.
Thanks for sharing this image of the shell of another gastropod beauty my friend,
Cheers,
Ivan

Merhaba Dr.Mehmet,
Selamlah!!
Thank you for another great collection of yours in shell!
I loved the long tail behind it with wonderful colour and pattern!
take care and my warmest regards to you and your family in Turkey!

Hello Mehmet!
Beautiful shell and very nice note. Your presentations about marine Mollusca are always nice for watching. It is really nice to see so professional presentation, always full of important and interesting details. And even if your Mollusca are always dead, you do a great work here in TN. And for that - many thanks! :>
