[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is my second posting of the same shell, a member of the muricid rock shells, Haustellum haustellum, collectively known as a Mouse Murex, a Snipe's bill Murex or a Woodcock Murex, a predatory denizen of the Indo-Pacific region which frequents partly shallow rocky, stony or pebbly bottoms, even some sandy to muddy substrates.
A compressed spire with a pointed apex characterizes this shell, together with a rather large, roundish aperture with smooth, pinkish to whitish inner surfaces, a very long and straight siphonal canal precedes it, nearly closed except for the presence of a very narrow slit-like ventral opening which is continuous from the anterior apertural edge to the tip of the canal housing. This unproportionally long siphonal canal has two different functions; it serves as a "breathing snorkel" while the mollusc is foraging among or within the loose pebbly-gravelly or sandy-muddy substratum to reach fresh seawater for respiratory purposes, or to "smell out" some possible prey items within the loose bottom. This specimen also sports a strongly formed varix bordering the outer lip of the aperture, which was typically formed by a thickening of the outer lip during a rest period in shell growth. Another, former, varix could also be seen just above the aperture.
This macro shot was taken under lateral daylight illumination with open-shade conditions, a contra placed crinkled aluminum folio passive reflector served as a weak fill-in light source. The specimen was placed over a dark BG.

Hello Mehmet,
Thanks for showing the underside of this beautiful shell too. Its shape is fabulous and your capture excellent!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

This shell is shaped in such a way I can imagine it to be several things simultaneously, Mehmet. It looks like a vessel with a handle, it looks like a bird, it looks like a ladle and so on.
But most of all, it looks beautiful.
Can't think of a better perspective either. The hollow part of the shell has veritable three dimensions.
The colours and patterns on the entire shell are exquisite.
Thanks for yet another gem from the sea.

Hi Mehmet,
Another one of your exclusive murex images. Looks fantastic the shape and form. Lovely colours and details and I like the laddle-like shape. The black BG owing to use of flash lets the subject stand out perfectly. Excellent composition.

Hi Mehmet
Quite the laddle huh? What an amazing structure does this beauty have! The specimen is shown in its fine details. I am impressed by the effect a dark BG is able to create on your subjects, for they help to isolate the subejcts extremely well. Very well done.
TFS & Cheers

Salam Mehmet,

I am always fascinated with this long pointed shell and collected them for my aquarium when I was much younger. I visited the beach recently and found out that it was sold for quite a price. Wonderful image with the horn pointing toward the lens. Well done and thanks for sharing.

Best regards,
