MERHABA DOSTLARIM,
I was out of reach of internet the last week, I'm afraid I've missed a lot of your wonderful nature captures in the meantime, hope to catch up with them soon...
I had posted a heavily processed version of this same shell a week ago as a New Year card, but also unfortunately violated the TN terms, so it was removed from the TN pages by the moderator. Today, I'm uploading the same shell in its natural form, this is a Horned Helmet shell, a Cassis cornuta of Cassidae family, usually seen in the Indo-Pacific region, frequenting the shallow to deeper sandy bottoms and predating on various echinoderms. As is evident from this apertural aspect, the spire of the shell is very low with a pointed apex, which is a little weathered on this shell of quite a young individual. The major part of the shell is formed by a large body whorl which exhibits three very low spiral ridges, and between them the shell is heavily pitted. The sutures between the whorls are most pronounced between the last and penultimate whorl, the angular shoulders of the last whorl display a number of protruding knobs or blunt spines, the "horns" of the shell. Here, the posterior end of an earlier lip has formed a strong varice (with three brownish blotches) just outside of the flared inner lip of the widespread aperture. Towards the columella the same lip has formed several strong plaits and the thickened, widened outer lip sports several strong teeth on the inner side. In the shells of more mature specimens the strongly flared lip structure form an enormous "shield" which is effectively used in breaking open urchin tests. The short siphonal canal partly seen at lower right corner is twisted and turned upwards dorsally. An impressive looking shell, the larger ones a favourite collectors item, they are sometimes also used for household decoration.
This close up was taken under a slightly unilateral (from the left) natural daylight with open-shade conditions, over a dark BG.
I hope the quite young Year 2009 will be a Happy and Productive one for all of the TN members!

Dear Mehmet
Another of your fine underwater specimens to start the New Year.Good idea to post this one as the first one was wiped out.
The details on the shell are rich and in good view but i do think the focus was lost out a bit and image got a tad soft compared to your otherwise usual outstandingly sharp images.
The dark BG you chose has helped excellently to highlight the colours and contrasts on the shell itself making the composition more interesting.
Thank you for your wonderful contributions in genre of marinelife and we hope to see more of your unique and priceless captures in 2009.Peace and Health to you and family

Merhaba Mehmet hocam,
sizin de yeni yılınızı kutlarım..
Yine nefis bir örnek sunmuşsunuz bizlere..
emeğinize sağlık...

Hallo Mehmet
The shells in your collection are splendidly shaped and so big in size. The most of them look solid and firm and not fragile like the ones I have seen in real life. The dotted markings on this peach coloured beauty are very eye-catching and striking. The brown spots look like they have been engraved or burned into the shell. The outer lining of the shell looks like that of an ear, and in this case it must be that of a giant as this is rather huge. A lovely presentation and as always very educational. Thanks for all your valuable contributions from your side to the site.
Best regards.
Anna

Merhaba Mehmet,
I wish you a happy and healthy 2009!
You start the year with a fine portrait of a species of Helmet shell that strikes a chord of familiarity. When we were snorkelling in the Caribean by Tobago I saw a similar species, quite large, easily 20cm long and probably the same genus as this Cassis.
This beautifully portrayed showing the salient features with fine sharpness and lighting.
Thanks for sharing this beauty as well as your customary informative note,
Cheers,
Ivan
