Water Pipit
Conservation status
Least Concern
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Motacillidae
Genus: Anthus
Species: A. spinoletta
Binomial name
Anthus spinoletta
(Linnaeus, 1758)
The Water Pipit, Anthus spinoletta, is a small passerine bird which breeds in the mountains of southern Europe and southern temperate Asia across to China. It is a short-distance migrant moving to wet open lowlands such as marshes and flooded fields in winter. Some birds migrate north to Britain for winter, taking advantage of the warm oceanic climate.

Like most other pipits, this is an undistinguished looking species on the ground, mainly brown above and dark streaked buff below. It has dark legs, white outer tail feathers and a longish dark bill. In summer it has a distinctive breeding plumage, with a pinkish breast, grey head and pale supercilium (Alström & Mild, 1996).

The Rock Pipit's subspecies littoralis in summer plumage is very close in outward appearance to the Water Pipit however. They can be told apart by their song (Leonovich et al, 1997) and occupy different habitat types even when they occur in the same general area (Bijlsma, 1977). The Water Pipit is also much less approachable than the Rock Pipit, rising high and quickly leaving the vicinity when approached. Water and Buff-bellied Pipit do not co-occur except in a small area in Central Asia (Nazarenko, 1978).

This species is insectivorous. Its call is an explosive "fit", like Rock Pipit. Its song is similar, but it consisting of maybe 5 "blocks" of just about half a dozen notes each (the Rock Pipit has less, but longer blocks); it ends either with no or with repeated trills.

Formerly included in the Water Pipit were the subspecies now separated as Rock Pipit and Buff-bellied Pipit (Sangster et al., 2002). The former is more closely related to the Water Pipit than the latter, as indicated by external (Alström & Mild, 1987) and molecular (Voelker, 1999) characteristics.

We are neighbors today and both with birds. Mine is a looong way off but yours is fine in clarity due its close in capture. Very timely click as the bird is about ready to pounce..VERY nice image!

Merhaba Omer,
what a wonderful picture of Water Pipit taken with superb sharpness, just at right moment you have captured this marvellous posture of the beautiful bird and the tiny fish, POV, DOF and colours are excellent in a very pleasant composition.
Best regards

I wonder what that poor fish was doing there Ömer, an interesting and finely isolated capture in good exposure and fine DOF control my friend, TFS indeed!

What stroke of good luck to have you as my neighbour on the gallery today, Omer!!
It is the theme of this picture that really puts it into a class unto itself -- the 'conversation' between the two subjects before the inevitable happens. It is a timely action shot that one can get only in a lifetime.
The image is technically not bad at all; the Pipit seems to be excited -- going by the expression on its face. The fish looks surprised -- maybe a little too late to reverse its action of popping out at the wrong time, ha, ha,ha!
Best regards,

Nice capture of the bird busy eating the fish. Good sharpness, details and light. a lower POV would have given a better picture. But capturing this rare moment is big in itself. :)

Merhaba Omer,
it is not only the photographic elements that counts. The moment of capturing in difficult situation is also being considered greatly. But to me, in this shot...you got both. The beauty and the moment.
Excellent presentation Omer. Really outstanding as per its colours and sharpness, composition and lighting.
Simply exciting.

NB: It is quite interesting, our common name for this bird is also pipit.

Both pictured moment and picture are wonderful. How could you see this scene? It is fantastic. Great timing, superb DOF: main characters are crisp sharp and FG and BG are nicely blurred. Colours are great too, rich and fine. Bravo. Perfect "report" shot.

Realismo y oportunismo em esta toma Omer. No es fácil ni descubrir estas escenas ni mucho menos captarlas, por lo que creo que se trata de un buen documento.

Hi Omer!

You present us a surprising picture. First, I said to myself, how come that a little fish is "standing" in the grass. After your notes, I understood that it was the only way for him to have a little conversation with that bird...

A pleasant, humerous and instructive posting.

Hi Omer,

I missed this one when I was on vacation! Fantastic timing to get this once in a lifetime shot. The expression on the Pipit's face is priceless. The bird and the fish are wonderful with natural colors and excellent details. Have to feel sorry for the poor little fish who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. A great picture in a wonderful setting.

Merhaba Ömer,
a very unusual snapshot of a Water pipit's way of having lunch! You seem to be a master of quick reaction, having all your equipment ready when sitting in your car, and creating precisely detailed and well composed images at even the most unexpected happenings.
Thank you! With best regards,

Merhaba Ömer Hocam,

Very interesting image of You again. As far as I knew, Water Pipit doesn't eat fish, only insects. About quality: I don't say it isn't top quality, I rather say You were a bit lazy to do necessary post-procession. There's a lot of oof grass-blades in the foreground - they should be cropped. Background noise must be removed. Color tones are too warm - but this is a question of personal taste, so I don't critique it. Overall conclusion: a halfly done excellent bird shot.
I give the dark green smiley (and the 100th points to the image) now, because the pic - as mentioned - is very interesting, and an example of quick reaction, but please don't be lazy next time. :)

Hallo Omer
Priceless is the first word that came to mind looking at this image filled with character and persona. The expression on the face of this wide opened mouth of the Water Pipit, is marvelous. This image captured from your car window is just once again proof that we do not always have to be up and geared with all the photographic equipment to take an spontaneous image like this one. This was an opportunity you have taken at the time it arouse and although you mention it is not a top quality shot, the whole natural scenery makes up for that is missing to be a top quality shot. Like always it was a pleasure to look and appreciate your wonderful photography. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards.
