MERHABA DOSTLARIM,
This fine looking specimen belongs to the genus Lambis, popularly known as Spider or Scorpion Shells found exclusively in the tropical Indo-Pacific region. These are rather large shells, they all develop long projections on the margins of the outer apertural lip of the adult shell, have a long siphonal canal and the characteristic stromboid notch of the strombids just above that canal. The smallish claw or sickle-like operculum does not close the aperture, situated at the posterior end of the muscular foot, it is used in frightening off the possible predators. Generally, the female is larger than the male.
THe specimen presented here belongs to Lambis scorpius, a Scorpion Shell, Known from the Strait of Malacca to north Australia and Samoa. The mature shell has a short spire partially engulfed by the posterior end of the large apertural lip extending and spreading from the body whorl, angular shoulders of the spire sport small knobs. Three posterior lip projections are rather long (on the left), the other three opposite the columella (visible part of the shell axis) are short and hooked, all six point posteriorly so the living mollusc can move forward (to the right) more easily. Because of these projections, these shells were formerly used by the natives as a dangerous fist weapon comparable to brass knuckles! All of these projections exhibit fine sulci ventrally, these narrow channels harbour the extensions of mantle tissue in the live animal, which secrete the projections while the shell grows, these form a kind of "anchor" to prevent the shell's sinking into the soft, sandy substratum the mollusc frequents. The deep stromboid notch has a scalloped edge, which makes the dorsal protusion of the long eye stalk possible, is visible at right just above the siphonal canal. The columella and the inner part of the apertural lip are strongly lirate, these lirae are usually white. Inside of the lip is pinkish brown, while the interior of the aperture is a rich purplish brown with white lirae quite evident. As I had mentioned once before regarding a Tulip Shell, here again the richly ornamented apertural innards of the shell are never visible while the animal lives and occupies its shell, so what does this ornamentation serve is a real mystery of nature!
A doubly diffused photoflood almost right above the specimen (longitudinal axis 16 cms) at 2 meters, only slightly offset to right to provide some 3-D effect in lighting was used to demonstrate the inner ornamentation of the aperture, the specimen was placed over a black BG.

Hello Mehmet,
I'm amazed at your huge collection of shells, one more beautiful than the other!! This is a very fine capture in wonderful colours. Details are also very sharp. Your skills at studio photography are admirable, I'd be interested in knowing more about your technique! (Perhaps you've explained at some point that I've missed?)
I'd love to be able to photograph fruit and seeds in this manner!
Many thanks and all the best wishes, Ulla

The anology with a scorpion is much more apt in the case of this remarkable shell, Mehmet.
Though I missed this beauty when you posted it, it is a sheer joy to look at it and admire it now.
I am deeply impressed with those intricate patterns and diverse attractive tones of colours on it.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Mehmet

Another very interesting shell macro and presentation from you.
I must admit i never heard about these "Scorpion Shells" before so it was nice to see and read something about them.
They really have very vibrant colors - much more than i've usually seen on shells - and that really makes them great subject for such photos.
Very nice work and presentation.
