[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
RECURVIROSTRIDAE is a family of wader birds from the order CHARADRIIFORMES. It contains two distinct groups of birds, the avocets (Recurvirostra) and the stilts (Himantopus and Cladorhynchus). The family is represented in Turkiye by two species. One of them, Himantopus himantopus - Uzunbacak [TR], Black-winged Stilt [EN] which I have posted in several times (photo 1, 2, WS (3), 4).

Today's post belongs to second species, Recurvirostra avosetta - Kılıçgaga [TR], Pied Avocet [EN]. This large wader breeds in temperate Europe and Western and Central Asia and migrates mostly to Africa or southern Asia for wintering. Some remain to winter in the mildest parts of their range (e.g. S Spain and S England).
In Turkiye, it breeds in suitable habitat of Central and Eastern Anatolia and also laguns in Western and Southern Anatolian coastal zones. It is a resident bird in these coastal regions. In last winter, I also saw them in Hirfanlı Damlake in Central Anatolia.
R. avosetta prefers brackish and salty shallow lakes, marshlands and laguns.
It usually feeds and breeds in small groups. The bird on the shot fed alone in a small natural pool near Kulu Lake (Konya Prov., Kulu District). But I saw some others at the distance of several hundred metres.

The shot was taken in early stage of my trip that I have came back today. It was from almost eye level using by Canon 600mm f/4 plus Canon 1.4X teleconverter, resulting 840mm. I hope you will like it.
