[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Recently, I was unable to enter TN because of a severe case of colds and just now trying to recover and follow my friends' new postings with one of my own, which I would like to dedicate to Radomir Jaskula (cicindela), a mutual friend from Poland and a fellow TN member, a serious nature photographer and a career zoologist.
The owner of this fine looking shell belongs to the family Volutidae or Volutes, most of its members are without an operculum and they are mostly carnivores. These possess attractive, colorful shells and always been great favourites with collectors. The aperture of the shell is distinctly notched in front by the siphonal notch and the columella (the visible shell axis at inner lip of the aperture) bears several pleats. A characteristic large, often bulbous initial whorl (protoconch) forms the blunt apex of the shell. They are well distributed in tropical waters, often inhabiting rather deep waters with sandy bottoms.
The present specimen is known as the Princely Volute (Cymbolia aulica), typically found in water with a depth to 2600 meters in southern Philippines seas. The shell is quite solid with a rather short spire. The first two-and-a-half smooth whorls form the large, blunt protoconch (seen at top-right), about three subsequent whorls (two on this rather small specimen of 65 millimeters) with slightly angular shoulders carry short, laterally compressed spines. Rather coarse growth lines can be seen on the body whorl. The long aperture ends at the shoulder posteriorly while the simple outer lip expands anteriorly (towards bottom-left). columella is slightly concave longitudinally, with three-four strong, spiral pleats. The anterior siphonal notch (lower left) is wide and moderately deep. The colour of the shell is pinkish, with irregular, generally large reddish-orange blotches, mostly in two spiral bands. This deep living shell is rather rare, hence is an important collectors' item.
This photo was taken under ambient daylight -open shade conditions-, coming from upper left, with a small white cardboard passive reflector at right to provide some fill-in light, over a black BG.

Hello Mr. Mehmet,
That's good to see again one of your very detailed and enigmatic works! As always, forms, shadows and colors are "perfectly feel" when I look at the photo. Luminosity is a point out of the ordinary, always well managed.

I'm glad you've recovered from that cold! I hope the best health for you!

Hello Mehmet,

Simply a stuning shot, excellent detail, beautiful colours, glad to hear your feeling better MF, take care, all the best,

Rick :)

Merhaba Mehmet,

An excellent macro with such vivid colors, sharpness & fine details. Very nicely taken, composed & presented. TFS & best salam!

Hallo Mehmet
I trust you are over the worst part of the flue now, I heard that Bayram was also struggling with influenza. It is not nice to have these symptoms were everything feel thick, blocked and aching all over. I did miss you around the site and wondered where you where, as I missed your specialized photography of shells. I even made mention of that in the posting I did on my 2nd anniversary on the site.

Just as fungi, I find the subject of mollusc very fascinating. In your notes of today's posting I found very interesting reading material. Now to get back to your image: What a spectacular sea shell which is perfectly captured from a great viewpoint, with neat details and excellent depth of field and favourable background which make the subject stand out well. The shape is beautifully formed and the orange and pearl white colour are in lovely contrast with one another. Thanks for sharing this lovely shell, as part of a dedication to a fellow member whom in my opinion does not get the recognition for his works as what he deserves. Best regards.

Ciao Mehmet, wonderful shell with great sharpness and good details, splendid contrast agaist dark BG, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Mehmet

Somehow I thought I have critique this beautiful Princely Volute, but I just discover to
my astonishment that it was not so. It is a fine dedication to Radomir, but unfortunately
it seems he is not yet aware of it. Don't worry; I think it won't be long before he knows
about it now. This is another masterful presentation of a lovely seashell and this time
it is a rare species and that is why I had the pleasure to link it to my theme for "RARE
or SIGNIFICANT contributions to TN
". Once again you showed that you mastered your
technique for photographing your beautiful shells, with excellent exposure management
and technically correct setup to get the best results in the image.

Great work MF and TFS.
Take care and have a great weekend.

HI Mehmet
J'aime bien cette image simple, bien présentée et qui est touchante par ce qu'elle évoque.. les formes parfaites que cette coquille d'escargot possède!
Bonne fin de semaine et bravo...JP
