Today I'm trying to demonstrate the colour variation within the same species, which is quite pronounced in the shells of certain mollusks. Up to now, I had shown the same phenomenon a couple of times, but those were the shells of bivalves, sea shells. You could observe colour variation in them either in separate valves or within the same valve, but in each case different colours were usually produced in relation with the growth process, i.e., the different colours were produced parallel to the main growth or age lines of the shell, usually the zones of growth arrest were darker coloured than the rest of the shell. On the other hand, in separate valve sets, some were lighter in colour, even pure white, while some others were strikingly coloured. The same can be seen here in these gastropod shells, they all belong to the same species but still they exhibit quite different colours. What is more interesting here, as can be seen in lower left and right shells, spirally oriented colour bands are in evidence, that is, colour production is not parallel to the growth lines but in right angles to them! Quite a different line of evolution produced this phenomenon, no doubt, but then in systematics the classis Gastropoda is as much removed from the classis Bivalvia as classis Mammalia is from the classis Reptilia!
Incidentally, these beauties belong to the family Muricidae, the Rock Shells or Murexes, which live among rocks or coral in rather shallow waters in the tropics or subtropics, leading an active carnivorous life style. They are scientifically known as Hexaplex cichoreum.
The photography was carried out under almost direct ambient daylight -open shade conditions- with a little help from a white cardboard passive reflector, over a black BG.

Merhaba Mehmet dostum,
A well presented display of the colour variation shown by the same species of mollusk.
The arrangement of the five shells and technical standard of the image are excellent.
The reddish brown colours looks like it is a substance similar to melanin. I have noticed such a variation in bivalves when walking on the beach and have wondered if it was individual variation combined with wearing action of the waves and sand. Obviously the latter cause is not so here, but I wonder what stimulates the production of the colours. Could it be dependent on what they ingest and are there external stimulants that cause the production of these colours such as camouflage that here necessitate a permanent type of marine habitat.
Just some trivial thoughts of an old man!
Thanks and have a good week MF,

Merhaba Mehmet,
what a fantastic presentation and composition like a wonderful bunch of flowers, superb sharpness and marvellous contrast of colours against a black BG, very well done.
Best regards
Ciao Maurizio

Hello Mehmet,
A wonderful collection of shells very nicely presented! Wonderful colours and interesting to see how the colours vary. I notice Ivan has some questions and I also wonder if the colour is dependent on how exposed they're to light? As always a technically perfect image.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

nice treasure, greetings Ori

Merhaba Mehmet bey,
Wonderful "shell against the black background" shot, as usual from You - but this time we see a whole collection, noot only one species. Fabulous contrast and sharpness as always, Sire. Bravo.
Tfs, also for the fine note. Best regards, have a nice week, László

Merhaba Mehmet,

Ten year ago I saw for the first time these same type mollusks, I found these then wonderful.
Also your picture is wonderful of color and composition. TFS.

Best regards,

Hallo Mehmet
I missed out on this very beautiful image. You posted it during the time I was very ill with glandular fever and did not partake too much on any activities at the time.

How glad I looked back in the gallery to that time and came across it. What a stunning collection of shells all together in one image. Each piece is a showpiece on its own, each one having its own colours, markings and shape, the one more beautiful than the other. I really like the combination of colours and detail of the last one (nr5). It surely is pretty and your photographic portrayal of it is super. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Love this image showing all the color variations plus I also like the how they all fill in the entirety of the image. Well done Mehmet.

Hi Mehmet.
Shapes of the shell are simply stunning. Nature is really the best Creator. However, you have reflected all these beauties with great skill. Lights, colours, shadows and composition are the best I think. Bravo.
