Falco cherrug - Uludoğan [TR], Saker Falcon [EN] is a very large falcon and my sixth species of the Falcon (Doğanlar) family FALCONIDAE (FALCONIFORMES) after
...- Falco columbarius - Boz Doğan (Merlin)
...- Falco peregrinus - Gökdoğan (Peregrine Falcon, Peregrine)
...- Falco vespertinus - Aladogan (Red-footed Falcon)
...- Falco tinnunculus - Kerkenez (Kestrel)
...- Falco naumanni - Küçük Kerkenez (Lesser Kestrel).
But it is one of 11 species from the genus Falco in Turkiye.
Distribution: F. cherrug breeds from eastern Europe eastwards across Asia to Manchuria. It is mainly migratory except in the southernmost parts of its range, wintering in Ethiopia, the Arabian peninsula, northern Pakistan and western China.
Conservation Status: It was listed by IUCN as Endangered [EN].
Etymology: English (even German and Dutch) vernacular name "Saker" came from Arabic صقر [Saqr]. Turkish name "Uludoğan" refers to its large size. Scientific name was latinized from Hindi name "charg" for the female F. cherrug; the tiercel, sakret or male being known as "chargela".
