Euphydryas aurinia (Marsh Fritillary) [in Turk. Nazuğum]

Hi friends, this weekend I’ve visited my dear friend Fevzi YAPICI (fyapici) who actually live in Bursa and we made a joint trip to the slopes of Uludağ Mts above Orhaniye village (approx. 1200 m asl., Kestel, Bursa) . While searching viper, we encountered with this rare beauty and took so many shots of course:) In this way i would like to dedicate this beauty to my beloved friend Fevzi for his heartfelt friendship. Hope you can like this dedication MF! Thanks a lot for everything!

TFL and have a nice week!

The Marsh Fritillary has colourful uppersides, being a highly-variable chequered pattern of orange, brown and yellow markings. The bright colours fade after a few days and leaves the butterfly with a shiny appearance - early Lepidopterists naming this butterfly the "Greasy Fritillary" as a result. This butterfly is primarily a wetland species as its modern name suggests.

Colonies of this butterfly are known to fluctuate wildly in numbers. It may be present in some numbers one year, for the population to crash the following year before recovering as unexpectedly. This species does not do well in adverse weather conditions and also suffers greatly from larval parasitism by an Apanteles species of wasp. Unfortunately, this charming butterfly is one of our most threatened species and has suffered severe declines in recent decades.

It ranged in Morocco, Algeria, Europe (From Pyrenees, through most of Europe, including Britain: absent from S & C Greece, Mediterranean islands and peninsular Italy), Turkey, temperate Asia and Korea. In Turkey, it is found as colonies in the northern parts and widely distributed in North- and South East. Adults emerge in the beginning of May, are on the wing till the beginning of August. There is one generation each year.

The butterfly uses several different types of habitat, including chalk hillsides, heathland, moorland and damp meadows. A factor common to all habitats is that they are in full sun, their higher temperature aiding larval development. The larval food plants are Scabiosa(Scabious) and Succisa (Devil’s bit) species belonging to the Dipsacaceae, or teasel family.

As for most butterfly species, the males emerge a few days before the females and set up small territories centered on a particular plant or flower. They will dart up to investigate any passing butterfly flying nearby. They will also patrol suitable areas, in the hope of finding a newly-emerged female. Once a female is found, the male flutters around her for a short while before mating takes place. Before separating, the male seals the genital opening in the female with a substance that prevents another male from mating with her - essentially providing a "chastity belt". Both adults are avid nectar feeders and will feed from a variety of flowers, favourites including Buttercups and Thistles. The female will search out large food plants when egg-laying, typically choosing one of the larger leaves on which to lay. She is quite conspicuous as she makes her slow flight looking for suitable plants on which to lay, no doubt weighed down by her load of eggs.
Neither sex wanders far from where it emerged, although those emerging later in the flight season are often seen some distance from the main breeding grounds; this dispersal may be a mechanism by which this species colonises new sites.

Selamlar Hocam, Bursa'dan sandık dolu dönmüşsünüz belli.
Nadir bir kelebeğin harika ve kusursuz bir makrosu olmuş.
Emeklerinize sağlık.

Lovely capture Bayram but perhaps this symmetric composition looks too "clinical" in my eyes.Of course that's a personal opinion and I also think that we have seen this beauty a couple of hundreds times already! Technically well executed image with good dept of field and moderate sharpness. In this current form the wings of the butterfly looks to close to the edge of the frame, I think! Good valuable notes as well!

Hello MF Bayram

Hallo Dayi,
This is one of the best butterfly macros I've seen. Super sharp, and I love the details and pattern on its wings. A+ quality job. It might be nice to see the underwing pattern too, but I'm not going to complain:-)

Hello Bayram,
Excellent photo of this butterfly in great sharp details, beautiful natural colours and a very good DOF.

Sooooo wide open wings - this guy was posing for you so wonderful. Excellent sharpness and brilliant colours. I also love the 3D-effect.
We don't have many butterflies here at the time because we always have rain. There only were 2 sunny days in the last time ;-(
So keep your fingers crossed for me - perhaps the weekend will be warm and sunny ;-)

Selamlar sevgiler,

Hi Bayram,
Very good colours and details. Maybe the crop is a little tight at the edges. Thanks for posting. Alan.

Merhaba sevgili Bayram,
Great shot of this rare species. Colours and background are very nice. Nice contrasts too. In Europe, specially in France and Belgium, it became very rare and officially protected. Last year, I went to a special natural reserve in Belgium, made for this species (with Succisa pratensis from where it feeds)... but I could not find it. It seems I must go to Uludağ to see it! Good evening,

Hello Bayram,
Excellent image taken with beautiful colors, great details and a good POV. Well done!

Hello My Friend,
Splendid colours and sharp details Bayram in this wonderful close up. As always such informative notes, thank you for this great posting.

Merhaba Bayram

"Hope you can like this dedication MF!" demişsin.

Thannkyou very much MF. I like it very much!

Gecikme için kusura bakma, iki gündür yerleşmeye çalışıyorum. Hastanedeki odamı taşıdım da :) Bilgisayarım çeşitli nedenlerle çalıştırılamadı, inşaallah yarın çalışır :)

Selam ve sevgiler.
