Callimenus (=Bradyporus) macrogaster macrogaster (“Chunky Bush-Cricket”) [in Turk. Tombul Çekirge] (Male)

Hi friends, today unusual and also chunky beauty which I captured (at focal lenght of 370mm) in Yamanlar Mts. It is almost endemic to W Anatolia indeed. The biology of this species is unknown. Since I could not find any proper English & Turkish names on this beauty, I gived:) Hope you like these names:)

TFL and Have a nice day!
Cheers,

*****************************

Orthoptera order has a significant ecological importance in the economy of terrestrial habitats because they can consume a considerable percent of the annual primary production of grasslands, being considered primary herbivores in many of them. Also, they contribute to the diet of many animals such as reptiles, birds, mammals and other arthropods. Another important aspect is that Orthoptera species are habitat specific and the study of Orthoptera assemblages are used as indicators for conservation purposes.

Callimenus (=Bradyporus) macrogaster, is one of the largest and also chunky:) Turkish (and also Greek) apterous bush-cricket (Tettigoniidae: Bradyporinae) with an average lenght of 5-5.5 cm. Its distribution is over the W, C and S Anatolia. However it is also reported from the adjacent island Rhodos (Greece). The Bornova population of the species is more abundant according to other locations. Males are smaller than the females. The ovipositor is very long (15-18 mm) in females. The adults are active from May to end of Jully.

Merhaba dostum,
I have just given critique on another image with the same species. Now I know what it is!
A fine capture showing the features with nice sharpness and colours from a good lateral POV.
If this is a Bush-cricket then it must be a Tettigonid, and not a Grylliid, like the colours suggest. Anyway its size must be impressive to view.
Thanks Bayram my friend,
All the best,
Ivan

Hello Bayram,
You've found a very strange Bush Cricket to show us this time!! A brilliant macro showing it sharply in focus with every details pin sharp. Great natural colours too and well composed.

Bayram hocam. Tobalak çekirge dediğiniz buydu galiba:)

Merhaba Bayram hocam,

Merhaba Bayram
You are a lovely, always polite man!! Even when naming crickets :-))

I found an interesting fact about the Bush Crickets in ""Exploring the Secrets of Nature"":
Bush Crickets court over long distances. The male of one African Species cuts a hole in a leaf, shaped to fit his wings, to amplify the sound he makes when rubbing his wings together.

Some male crickets supply their partner with protein rich package attached to the sperm sac - so she dos not devour the sperm sac but the food - et voila the spermsac is savely injected...

Another perfect macro from you for my Animal Behaviour theme!

İyi geceler
from South Africa
Ingrid

Merhaba MF Bayram,
this is indeed a chunky one. The short and stout view is excellent with excellent sharpness and the details are well featured. I like the mono pestel colours being composed. I like the shallow depth as it gives a nice compressed view.
Beautiful capture and the blurry background really helps.

Foozi
