Caprimulgus europaeus (Nightjar) [in Turk. Çobanaldatan]

Today a rather rarely seen species on TN and also 1st post from Turkey! During our night searchings in Çığlıkara, I encountered with another “night beauty” apart from the mother scorpion who carrying her childs on her dorsum which I’ve uploaded two days ago. For focusing I used my led head lamp and then I've used the integrated flash for photographing.

This crepuscular bird has finely patterned tree-bark like cryptic plumage that provides excellent camouflage in the daytime when it is inactive. Adults have a flat, wide head, small bill and large eyes that enable them to see in low light levels. Males can be distinguished from females by their white wing patches. Due to their long wings and tail, nightjars are very agile flyers. The scientific name Caprimulgus means 'goat sucker'; the species was fabled to milk goats due to their wide, soft mouths and habit of feeding near grazing animals. This superstition is ancient, dating back to Aristotle. The common name 'nightjar' refers to the loud jarring or 'churring' call of the male, which can contain 1900 notes per minute. A 'coo-ik' call is also given in flight.

This beauty is the only representative of the nightjar family of birds in most of Europe and temperate Asia.

Nightjars hunt for insects on the wing at dusk and dawn, their agility allows them to perform rapid twists and turns in pursuit of their prey. Most of the diet consists of moths, flies, craneflies, beetles, and ants. Nightjars have an unusual serrated middle claw which they use to preen their feathers.

You can find more detailed info on the species from here.

TFL and have a nice Saturday!
Cheers,

Hello dear!
What an interesting capture! I remember you tried to capture the birds we saw while driving at night from Çığlıkara (maybe we met this one?). Finally you found the way to do it with your head lamp. Great details and natural colours. Fantastic camouflage. Have a nice weekend,
Cathy

Hello Bayram,
One of the best photos of a Nightjar I've seen so far. Completely isolated from the BG. Most of the time they are good camouflaged. Fantastic colours and sharpness. Beautiful contrasting against the BG. Taken from a very good POV.
Regards,
Peter

amazing capture, TFS ori

My first sighting of this species of birds, Prof Bayram.
It is a wonderful capture in the darkness using your headlamp and flash.
The eye of the bird glows like a ruby.
Well done and TFS.

Merhaba Bayram dostum,
Congratulations on this fine capture of the European Nightjar.
The use of flash has helped to show its features with excellent sharpness and colours and its great to see the small feet.
It looks like you have not taken this shot yet, as the date, 31 Sep, does not exist! :0).
Thanks and have a good weekend MF,
Ivan

Wow!
What a stunning shot, Big Bro!
Very crisp and beautifully presented!
I love the sharpness and the details, esp. the red eye you've so brilliantly captured!
Cheers!

This surely must be a unique moment to capture and you have manage to be there in the right time friend Bayram! One of those rear lucky moments. Every wildlife enthusiast photographer can be jealous of that! Bravo! The image under those difficult circumstances looks a bit flat and covered with bluish cast in my opinion. This and the red eye can easily be corrected in Photoshop. Your notes as usually are colorful and warm! Have a great day my friend!
Regards,
George Veltchev

Maybe i'm wasting other points for you, but a great photo is a great photo.Another one, i would say.The red eye is attention grabbing and the plumage is very well presented.Your subject is not the best of beauty, but your photo extracts its hidden charm.

Hello Bayram,
Fantastic capture with superb colours and perfect details.
Excellent focus, clarity and lovely composition. Congratulation!
Marius.

Selam my dear friend,
Happy Ramazan. Eid Mubarak. A lovely capture of this beautiful and cute looking Nightjar. Sharp details and a lovely composition. Enjoy the Holiday. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Nice that you had some time to take this shot. And especially intriguing that the bird shows red eye just like humans. While we try to rid of it, it is a natural happening. I like the approach of "what you see is what you get"

Bonjour Bayram,
What a nice night-encounter, you have been very lucky that night! A wonderful and special bird with such a subtle plumage, the red eye due to your headlamp being a beautiful color-contrast too. Amazing how these birds just rest on the ground.
A most intersting posting, thanks also for your note
Kind regards
Anne

Magnífico trabajo de este joven Caprimulgus ( "chotacabras"
lo denominamos popularmente en España). Excelente luz y colores y oportunidad para poder capturarlo.
Yo también tengo una especie capturada cerca de mi domicilio. Buen documento Bayram.

Merhaba MF Prof. Bayram,
such a difficult capture of this bird. But you managed it very well. I could think of it flying away upon going near to it.
Lovely details and attractive red eye.
