Pseudochazara anthelea (White Banded Grayling) [in Turk. Anadolu Yalancı Cadısı]

While we were searching herptiles in Mut (Mersin province) I encountered with a visual feast of a pair of this beautiful b-fly species:) Yes! this is absolutely courthship behaviour between the sexes of the species. The courtship of butterflies involves a variety of behavioral, physiological and biochemical mechanisms. A male butterfly actively searches for the female, using mainly “visual stimuli”. In this case, male was dancing in front of the female, moving left and right sides quickly and lady responding this invitation by closing her body to the ground. This courtship behavior took approx. 10 minutes. The monitoring of this event was nice, excited and amusing for me:). I also attached an another shot from this scene as WS.

Today I am dedicating this “love torrent” post to another heartfelt and butterfly admirer TN friend, Roberto INNOCENZI (cobra112) from Italy. All the best amico Roberto!

TFL and Cheers,

*****************************

A relatively rare and large butterfly with a wingspan of 45-50 mm in the male and 50-55 mm in the female.

The upperside ground colour of the male is dark brown, almost black. There is o wide white postdiscal bond with two ocelli and o black line of androconia in the cell. The underside ground colour of the forewing is white with o grey-brown border and two ocelli in the postdiscal area. The underside of the hindwing is grey-brown with a wavy white postdiscal band.

The female is larger and does not resemble the male. The upperside ground colour is brown with a wide, orange-brown, postdiscal band of a deeper colour in the forewing containing two black ocelli with white centres. The underside ground colour of the forewing is orange-brown, with a grey-brown border and two ocelli in the postdiscal area. The underside of the hindwing is light grey.

Pseudochazara anthelea is a species of the Balkans, Turkey, Cyprus island and northern Iraq.

The adult butterflies begin to emerge at the end of May and are on the wing until October in a single brood. Thought to overwinter in the larval stage. lt The larval host-plants are various species of the Poaceae family. It is much more common at altitudes over 1000 m. It frequents sparsely vegetated, rocky areas, resting on the ground or on rocks with wings closed. Flies low and fast and often returns to same spot from which it flew. It is attracted to the flowers of Centaurea sp., which grows in poor ground and rocky areas, in the habitat favoured by P. anthelea.

Hello Bayram,
A great close-up shot of this courting pair. Very pleasing lighting and excellent detail make this a top quality photo indeed. Their wing patterns and color make them well camouflaged while sitting on this boulder. Super job!!
I viewed a similar photo and video that CatherineD had posted recently of a courting pair of butterflies, it also was very interesting.
Ron

Dear Bayram,
touching to see a precise scientific observation of behaviour turn into loving compassion with some of our fellow beings on earth. Very charming documents of courtship, both of your images here. Looking at this set of postings I notice the rare occasion where I completely forget about a certain species being a rare one or not, a capture being technically well made or not - where I just feel myself drawn into a simple and honest, well told story of life.
Thank you! With friendly regards,
Peter
