Again, after a lengthy interval, I will try to introduce you to one of my favourite shells, a member of the Cassidae family, aka Bonnet and Helmet Shells known from shallow tropical-to-temperate seas with sandy - pebbly bottoms. They are predators which usually feed on sea urchins and other echinoderms. A well known group within the family is Scotch Bonnets or various Phalium granulatum subspecies, which sport moderately heavy shells formed of about 5 whorls. The living mollusc covers the large aperture with a horny, fan shaped operculum. Towards anterior the aperture draws into a strongly curved siphonal canal (at lower right of the picture).
The subspecies widespread in the Mediteranean-Aegean seas, also in east Atlantic is Phalium granulatum undulatum shown here from its apertural side, has a rather high spire with slightly angular shoulders and distinct sutures. Strong, spiral cords near the lip of the body whorl are quite distinct. The thickened edge (varice) of the outer lip has around 17 teeth. Columella is smooth posteriorly but pustulate or granulate anteriorly (seen towards lower-middle). The colour is creamy brown, with brown axial "flame" marks. Interstices of cords usually a darker brown. Varice of the outer lip with broad and narrow brown bands (seen better from the body whorl side). Inside of the lip, anterior of columella and slight shield are white.
This shell (of 6 cms) was collected from a sandy bottom about 8 meters deep near Eski Foca - Izmir while snorkelling. Unidirectional ambient daylight coming from left-bottom was utilized for the photography, with open-shade conditions to emphasize the whitish zone of the apertural complex, against a black BG.

Hello Mehmet,
Again a wonderful shell collected under water, what makes it even more interesting! Funny name too for this beautifullly-shaped shell.
As usual well presented picture and an interesting note.
thanks alot

Dear Mehmet,
a great pleasure to enter the world of mediterranean molluscs again looking at this invitingly placed helmet shell. Delicate smooth transitions of colours emerging by a very skilled use of ambient daylight. Fascinating to see parts of the aperture from the centre to the left obviously being of high glassy transparency.
Thank you! With best regards,

Hello Mehmet, another great still-life image of this shell. It 's really incredible ability to make your photo so well in these subjects. Another amazing image. Greetings and a good, Paul
