Large Cherequered Skipper

Turkish Name: Beyaz Benekli Zıpzıp Kelebeği

Distribution in Turkey: North-western Black Sea coast of Turkey. Kirklareli, Istanbul, Kocaeli.

Distribution in the world: Turkey. The European part, the Caucasus, Siberia from the Urals and the Altai to the Ussuri region. Relatively constant in external features throughout the distribution range.

Living Area: Above sea level to a height of 1000 meters. Forest edges, wet meadows, marshes, bogs.

Flight time: One generation. Late May Late June.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Poa-(Meadow-grass), Brachypodium sylvaticum-(False Brome), Calamagrostis-(Reedgrass), Phragmites australis-(Reedgrass), Phragmites australis-(Common Reed) is fed plants.

Description-Notes: Very rare and local butterfly. It has a characteristic bouncing flight in which it seems to have difficulty getting off the ground, that can’t be mistaken in flight for anything else.-(It has a characteristic bobbing flight.) Above, this lovely species is chocolate brown with several pale forewing supapical spots, but most easily idendified by its, unique hindwing below that contains large, rounded-ringed white spots.

Wingspan: 18 - 24 mm long.

A very fine macro of a fresh male morpheus. The POV suits the pose perfectly, taken with top sharpness and natural colours in a pleasing composition with the Rubus flower.
