Dark Green Fritillary

Turkish Name: Güzel İnci Kelebeği

Distribution in Turkey: Turkey is anywhere. More rare in the Aegean region.

Distribution in the world: Mediterranean coastal countries, and with hot spots in Asia are in Japan.

Living Area: Can be seen up to the heights of 3000 meters above sea level. Prone areas and areas covered with bushes light prefers meadows. In particular the edges of forest openings and road is common. It is usually seen flying fast across open areas of grass and herbs. It is also found in forest meadows but this is less usual.

Flight time: Mid-June – Mid August months as a single generation flies.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars Bistorta major, riviniana Viola, Viola hirta, Viola palustris and feeding on plants that develop in the family.

Description-Notes: This is a powerful butterfly. Males are smaller than females. The male has bright orange uppersides marked with black along veins and with many round and triangular black spots. The female is similar but is less brightly coloured and with more extensive black markings. Bright reddish orange upper sides have a typical fritillary look, with an intricate of black lines and spots. Male has a small forewing basal spot; female is duller, with dark basal area on both wings. Postmedian band on hind wing has five black spot always beinng the smallest. Hindwing is greenish with large silvery spots; note the wide, pale yellow-orange postmedian band and row of silver submarginal spots. English name is derived from the colouration of the underside of its wings which a green leading to pale yellow-brown with pure white spots.

Wingspan: 58-68 mm long.
