[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is a male Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata-TR:Bozkır Ötleğeni). It has a range spanning from Cape Verde Islands to southeast Turkey, spanning most of north Africa as well as Mediterranean and Near East.
Like most of the birds we call "warblers" in Old World, it was once considered to belong to Old World Warblers (Sylviidae). However in the recent decades this treatment of getting all warblers in one huge family has been found to be erroneous and apparently does not reflect true evolutionary relationships. The family was split into several smaller ones, Spectacled Warbler here residing in Sylviid Babblers, Sylviidae.
Until 2002 this species only had 3 records from Turkey and was considered a vagrant. But foreign birdwatchers found what seems to be a quite large breeding population (up to 200 pairs) in Karacadağ, Diyarbakır, where this photo was taken. Over the course of years it has been discovered as a breeding bird in other parts of southeast Turkey, such as Hatay, Gaziantep and, this year, in Malatya; which makes this a local but spreading species.
It looks like a Common Whitethroat, but it is smaller with brighter colours. Note the darker lores, darker grey head, brighter rufous on wings and shorter primary projection.
This individual was very obliging and we watched it for 5 minutes as it sang and fed, sometimes out of my lens focus distance!

Welcome to TN, Kuzey!
I have seen this bird for the first time, and what a sight! Absolutely stunning capture. The eye in particular is the best part of this image. The DOF is fabulous.
Thanks and all the best on TN!
