[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Dead Sea Sparrow (Passer moabiticus-TR:Küçük Serçe) is a species of Old World Sparrow, belonging to family Passeridae, and is a close relative of House Sparrow.
It breeds in SW Asia. There are 3 subspecies:
P. m. moabiticus is resident in Israel and Jordan.
P. m. mesapotamicus is a summer visitor in S Turkey, Cyprus, N Syria and C Iraq to SW Iran.
P. m. yatii, also known as Yates's Sparrow, breeds on the borders of E Iran and SW Afghanistan. It winters in W Pakistan.
It is a small sparrow, about 12 cm long. Male has a grey head, black bib and lores, long buffish supercilium, white submoustachial stripe, yellow neck patch, chestnut median & greater coverts, black shoulders and black streaked brown back.
Nominate and mesapotamicus races have greyish bellies, while yatii has yellowish underparts.
Female is like a washed out, pale female House Sparrow.
It breeds in riverine areas with trees or scrubs.
This male was near it's nest and it was very vocal and active. It's call was very similar to that of House Sparrow's chirping. I spent little time with it in order not to disturb the bird.
Thanks for your critiques. Cheers!
