Common Name: The Little False Apollo

Turkish Name: Küçük Yalancı Apollo Kelebeği

Distribution in Turkey: The environs of Erzincan, Elazığ and Muş; in addition, the region extending from Siirt to Hakkari and Van to the east.

Distribution in the world: The species is distributed in western and north-western Iran, northern Iraq and north-eastern Turkey (Häuser 2006, Nazari & Carbonell 2008).

Living Area: Archon apollinaris probably inhabits dry and rocky places with sparse vegetation, up to around 600-1,800 metres above sea level.

Flight time: For a year one generation is developing. Flight occurs, depending on the altitude, from March - April.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: The larva is said to feed on Aristolochia maurorum (Ackery 1975), A. bottae (Koçak 1982), A. olivieri and A. paecilanthea (Hesselbarth et al. 1995).

Description-Notes: Typical area, Asia minor [Turkey, Goman Otti Mt, 1500 m.]. For a long time, the taxon apollinaris has been treated as a subspecies of Archon apollinus (Herbst, 1798). Due to its sympatric occurence with apollinus in parts of its range (Frédéric Carbonel 1991) and to morphological and genetical differences, it is now regarded to be a distinct species (De Freina 1985). In Turkey, Nearly identical to, but noticeably smaller than False Apollo, which it replaces in southeastern Anatolia.
Archon Some Discrimination Criteria :
Abdomen color: A.apollinaris abdomen dark color. In A.apollinus, it can be in the yellow regions besides the dark color.
Altitude: A.apollinus descending to sea level. A.apollinaris flies from the sea inside and higher altitude.
Dark markings in the forewing are much weaker in apollinaris, the dark margin of the hindwings is much narrower, the submarginal spots being smaller, with only little red. In the males of apollinaris, the hindwings are devoid of any further markings, in the females, they are less scattered than in A. apollinus.


Front Wing Lenght: 20-25 mm long.

Origin of name: Archon (Greek: ἄρχων, romanized: árchōn), is a Greek word that means "ruler", frequently used as the title of a specific public office. It is the masculine present participle of the verb stem αρχ-, meaning "to be first, to rule". In the early literary period of ancient Greece the chief magistrates of various Greek city states were called Archon.
