The sheer whiteness of a Barn Owl makes it easy to identify. Other owls can look very pale when caught in the glare of car headlights but only the Barn owl is completely white below, even in its face.
Breeds and winters in open country, with rough grassland. Breeds in derelict buildings or holes in trees.
A declining bird of England, Wales and southern Scotland. Most common in Lincolnshire and East Anglia. Often seen hunting during the day in the summer, particularly along ditches and roadside verges.
Found throughout Europe, except Scandinavia but rarely seen due to its nocturnal habits.
4 400 breeding pairs in Britain plus 600-900 in Ireland. Mid-winter populations are estimated to be between 12 500-25 000 birds.
100 000-210 000 breeding pairs. Spain, France, Italy, Germany and Britain are its major strongholds in Europe.

Nice shot of my favorite owl. Interesting that you should mention headlights. Sadly we have seen so many of these owls dead on the side of the road in California. Maybe they are attracted to the light????
I like the close crop.
