Have great day and hope you'll like it!

Infos from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kingfishers are birds of the three families Alcedinidae (river kingfishers), Halcyonidae (tree kingfishers), and Cerylidae (water kingfishers). There are about 90 species of kingfisher. All have large heads, long, sharp, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. They are found throughout the world.
The taxonomy of the three families is complex and rather controversial. Although commonly assigned to the order Coraciiformes, from this level down confusion sets in.
The kingfishers were traditionally treated as one family, Alcedinidae with three subfamilies, but following the 1990s revolution in bird taxonomy, the three former subfamilies are now usually elevated to familial level; a move supported by chromosome and DNA-DNA hybridisation studies, but challenged on the grounds that all three groups are monophyletic with respect to the other Coraciiformes; which leads to them being grouped as the suborder Alcedines.
The tree kingfishers have been previously given the familial name Dacelonidae but Halcyonidae has priority. This group derives from a very ancient divergence from the ancestral stock.
Kingfishers live in both woodland and wetland habitats. The Laughing Kookaburra, at 45 cm the world's largest kingfisher, is a woodland bird, while the European Kingfisher Alcedo atthis is always found near fresh water.
Kingfishers that live near water hunt small fish by diving. They also eat crayfish, frogs, and insects. Wood kingfishers eat reptiles. Kingfishers of all three families beat their prey to death, either by whipping it against a tree or by dropping it on a stone.

Hi Sebnem,
Wow what a decisive moment! Its pose and position just perfect giving an unobstructed view of this majestic bird. The DOF has made it stand out of the image....maybe a touch to soft as the texture is a bit lost.Great work...TFS.
Regards, David

Hello my friend,
I notice that you return to a Canon camera with a big IS lens... You seems better with the EOS 30D ;-) And the first result is great without tripod. The bird stand out from the nice BG. The blue colors are superb. The shape of wings is nice.
Bravo Sebnem !

Hi Dew,
Finally the first test shot. Looks like a lot of us have folled the thread on this lens. I am really impressed about the handheld quality considering weight and maginification of the lens. The inflight moment captured it really stunning. A pitty that you lost the RAW. Anyhow, looking forward to some more of your test shot....I can just imagine how beautiful the final shot will look like.

Hi Sebnem.
What a beautiful in flight shot with great pose of the bird and amazing perfect blurred with delicate colour BG. This is really artistic and elegant shot. My compliments and TFS.

Hi Sebnem,
Let us start with the positive...IMHO(in my humble opinion)
Colours are great. Compo is great. BG is great. Bird is great. The 'decisive moment' is great; birdie with open wings.
BUT (don't shoot me)...
My critique is the following: the eye and beak are more or less in a dark shadow. On the other hand there still details to detect in the shadow parts.
In the mean time I read your note...I should doen this before start critiquing.

About the softness...possibility of camera shake:
I wonder if the image stabilizer was 'on'. Maybe it is a silly question but I wonder at what shutter speed there is the possibilty to have camera shake.
Here you have a focal length of if I'm not mistaken...
500 x 1,6 (due to APS sensor 30D)=800mm
800 x 1,4 (due to converter)=1120mm!

Now applying the rule: "Use a shutter speed with at least the same value as the focal length"

So here..you have a shutter speed of 1/2000s...this is less than one step above the minimum 1/1000s.

Conclusion: handheld NOT recommended;-) IMHO...

Can't wait to see next post;-)

Hi Sebnem, what a great photo did you took. Just at the right moment with that light on the wings. Good composition.
Greetings Jan-Arie

Hi Sebnem,
I like the way you freeze this Kingfisher in mid air. The color saturation just stunning. Very nice composition. Congratulations to this practice shot which is very impressive to me.

Sebnem GENIAL... un momento perfecto, buen trabajo... saludos

Hello Sebnem,
I don't think I have ever seen the picture of a Kingfisher in flight here on TN. When I looked at the thumbnail, I thought it was a duck.
So this is a test shot with your new equipment. Congratulations! You have mastered it already.
If I were to nit-pick, I would say that I do not see the eye of the bird clearly. Other than that, it is your usual high quality shot which captures an exciting moment at the exact moment of time when the bird is poised for a kill with its wings trimmed and legs at full backward stretch for maximum impact.
As for POV, DOF, colours and sharpness, I don't miss a thing.
The wait between posts in your case is worth its while, Sebnem.

Hi Sebnem,

A very good test shot as I know its quite difficult to get a fast bird well focussed in flight, sharpness can be improved and a pity that he just turned his head to the right instead to the left, but I think its a nice shot,

Saludos... Ricardo

Perfect speed Sebnem to freeze this wonderful bird in the middle of flight.
I like the framing that you chose, with appropriate sharpness (not perfect) and focus that it also generates a very diffuse bottom.
I coincide in your appreciation on the opposed illumination to the face of the bird, although the beauty of the image deserve their presentation.
Congratulations for the new equipment.
Best regards... Ricardo

Merhaba Sebnem,

Hi Sebnem,
A good in flight shot on this Kingfisher. Perfectly frozen in the air ith a beautiful wing spread. As you stated, the light was not at the best angle to get the eye. Exposure otherwise looks great with the colors. Hope to see many more with the big lens.

Hi Sebnem

I've been folowing the discussion on the forum between you an Annick and i've become very interested in the results of you new equipment :)
Great work, especially if considering it's handheld. The sharpness isn't perfect, but since you lost the RAW and it's just a practice shot - as you said - i'm sure that will emprove with thime. The lens seems to be great and the TC really lets you get a lot closer :)
There is one small details i don't understand: how much light was there that you had to compensate the bias with +0.3 and you still had a shutter speed os 1/2000?
Anyhow, coming back to the picture, i love the colors here and the fact that you managed to catch it in-flight with simply nothing else in the frame, only a nice pale BG.
Great work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Sebnem,
this is maybe not your best shot, but it's a great test shot,
specially for a Nikon'er who using Canon stuff. hehe ;-))
As you mantion a RAW may have helped you but I'm not sure.
The details in the wings are quite good but i can see some softness, nice colours, good POV and pose. The DOF is great, the bird standout well from the nice BG.
Well done, my friend, go for the next one.

Hello Sebnem,
the picture is good, the pose you captured too.
But I assure that you can't handheld a 500mm lense f4, it's to heavy to get sharp pictures also at fastest aperture.
We can see all the artifacts of the post-production works.
You'd better to use an heavy tripod and set the IS button mode to 1.
I hope you agree my comment ???

Nice detail on the bird, however I feel that the blurred background in this case is a little too devoid of detail. In this sort of shot I would prefer to see some of the natural surroundings to place the bird in. Still an excellent capture due to the difficulty level of the subject and the monster focal length!!

your note sums up...you made the best of the shot..and that is better than just letting it go into the recycle bin
you must have done a lot to get a freeze like this..do you use frame bursts...if thats what its called..canon is becoming my favourite camera..along with your photos..
the eye could be ...well sort of faked??

Hi Sebnum, I seem to have missed some of your latest photos, and I have no points left!!
Yor kingfisher is so bright and sharp. He looks so good in flight here against the sky. Well captured,

Merhaba Şebnem,
Gerçekten birbirinden güzel fotoğrafların var.
Makine ve ekipmanlarını tam kapasite kullanmışsın.Zamanlama, netlik ve renkler harika

Ouchh... even though the face is in the shadows I would love to have an in-flight like this. Well done.

Very lovely action shot. Very beautiful bird. Very nice capturing its colors in the light. Nice creamy background to help the bird pop out. I wish the bird would have looked abit towerd its left wing enstead of its right so we can see his eye, but as we all know we can never get our subjects to cooperate. :)

Hi Sebnem, lovely bird, one of the better photo of your wonderful gallery, that i see for the first time this evening, I love this photo, great pose, splendid colors, perfect focus, great sharpness, grazie, ciao Silvio

Okay, the head may be underexposed, but this is an excellent shot!! You froze the bird perfectly. And all I want is a kingfisher in my viewfinder. Just sitting on a branch is good enough for me. :) Well done Sebnem!

Merhaba Sebnem,
Fantastic!!!! This blue bird in motion is animate even on a photo.
One of the best pictures I've seen on a TrekNature.

Merhaba Şebnem Hanım,
Ben bu şaheseri nasıl olmuş da atlamışım? Mükemmel... Ne söylenebilir ki? Elleriniz dert görmesin.

Wow! Sebnem this is so amazing They are so hard to catch anyway but to get such detail in flight of this fast flyer. I know the area we go past it when I see my relatives never see much wildlife there but I suppose I've never really looked out for it. Nice equipment you got and you used it very well. Tebrikler Selam Necip.

Beautiful capture, very well placed in the frame with a perfect pose, great vivid colous and the background makes it!
Looks as if you cutted the bird from another shot and sticked on the BG like a collage :)
Well done and my late Happy new year!

Hello Sebnem
I think everything has been said about this wonderful photo...so here goes. The colours are just excellent on your Kingfisher. I know how difficult capturing a moving bird can be and you did a great job crisp and clear. He's like a little angel in the sky the way you captured his wing movement. Good notes and TFS
Happy New Year

What an amazing capture of this image of such a gloriously colourful bird Sebnem. You are a very talented photographer with amazing abilities. I used to have a pair of Kingfisher's that would come and nest on property every year, it was amazing. However I didn't have a decent camera at the time. Wonderful.

Hi Sebnem,
Wow......it cannot be any better. The stunning colours and the awesome details on its plumage and wings looks majestic. A wonderful moment freezed with subtle use of shutter speed with amazing lighting and razor sharp focus. The neutral BG compliments the subject well and enhances the beauty manifold. Excellent POV and DOF. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Oh my god Sebnem you took that image without a tripod? Nice notes!

Hello Sebnem

A very beautiful composition of this bird in flight BIF.The colours are vivid and bold. The focus is very good with sharp details. The plumage shows extremely well.Great POV.Excellent camera work.TFS

Hello Sebnem,

This is a perfectly composed image of a very beautiful bird in a unique moment! I like the simplicity of the composition and appreciate the lack of distracting objects. You placed the bird in one of the most powerful points of the composition and froze it in midair. I wonder whether you use the burst mode in situations like this. This would allow you to capture several poses of the bird while hovering. The plain background isolates the kingfisher perfectly from the surroundings. I wouldn't worry about the little noise since it isn't distracting from the beauty of the picture. The colors look great and the details well exposed. This short shutter speed was crucial for the success of this shot. Thank you very much!

With Friendly Regards,

Hi Sebnem. Nice result of fine camera setting to get such a clear photo of those fast-moving wings. Beautiful work. TFS. Murray.

Hi Sebnem!
Wonderfull and very sharp picture made in the exactly right moment (should be very very difficult).I like the blue color of the bird,it makes a great contarst to the background!
