[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The juvenile Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) has a plumage and general appearance similar to that of the Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), the juvenile Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) and the Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides) and inexperienced birdwatchers often get confused between these three species.
The Little Bittern is a lot smaller than the Bittern and Night Heron and significantly smaller than the Squacco Heron.
The adult male has a bright , clean looking appearance while the adult female is more striped than the male but less streaked than the juvenile.
The little bittern is very secretive and hard to see.
Little Bitterns leave Europe between August and October, spending the winter south of the Sahara. They return from Africa in March and April. In Cyprus they appear as a common passage migrant but are also known as an occasional breeder.
