A few days ago I captured this cock Ring-necked Pheasant all decked out in his brightest mating plummage. He was crowing and flapping his wings trying his darnedest to find a lady.

Ring-necked Pheasant
Phasianus colchicus Order GALLIFORMES - Family PHASIANIDAE - Subfamily Phasianinae
The Ring-necked Pheasant was introduced into North America from Asia and is established over much of the continent, especially in agricultural lands. It is a distinctive and colorful species and is a popular game bird.

Cool Facts

In very bad weather, pheasants are known to stay on a roost for several days without eating.

Pheasants practice "harem-defense polygyny" where one male keeps other males away from a small group of females during the breeding season.

Across the native range, about 34 races of the species are recognized. The Green Pheasant race is sometimes considered a different species. Multiple introductions of different races have been made in North America.

Description
topSize: 50-70 cm (20-28 in)
Wingspan: 56-86 cm (22-34 in)
Weight: 500-3000 g (17.65-105.9 ounces)

Medium to large chicken-like bird.
Long tail, often held cocked up at an angle.
Wings rather long and rounded in flight.

Hi Rick,
now that is a colourful fellow and I like his pose. This photo really shows well the variety of his plumage and the only other bird I have photoed as colourful is the male wood duck.looking as he does I think he will find a hen in no time.I have stumbled on these birds and have been startled by them to the point of nearly shaking as when they take off they really are very loud when not expecting them.A beautiful bird and thank you for giving us this view. Bob

Hi Rick,
An amazing and colorful bird!
And you captured it making honnor to all of its feather's vivbrant colours.
I like the pose with the turned head that let us admire it at its best.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
My best regards,
JM

Interesting how colourful and brave they are when they are "out of season" so to speak. I have NOT seen one sol well coloured since back in Ohio...Very nicely done Rick...it is warming now here and I wish the same for you!

Hi Rick. He is going to find a beautiful Lady very soon, make love and have a lot of kids. Thats the way life is.
Just beautiful Photo.
Saludos Rick.
Luis52.

Very handsome male Ring-necked Pheasant, Rick.
Shot from the rear, it presents its lovely mating plumage to our great benefit.
Very well controlled shot.
Wish that barbed wire on top could have been avoided.
Never mind; it is a winner alright.
Regards.

Amazing details and just beautiful colors.
A great POV to show off the patterns in his feathers.
The barbed wire is a bit distracting.

Hi Rob

A great shot - good composition and POV with good colour and superb detail. Well observed and captured. The pheasants have started do 'do their stuff' here too - very noisy!

Hi Rick,

He certainly is dressed up in all his finery. It shouldn't take him long to find his lady. The colors of his face and head are amazing. I love his plummage with the lovely patterns and earth tone colors. The background shows him off well but the wire is a bit distracting.
