Avalanche

I'm happy to say, today is my 4th year with TrekNature.

I'd like to share an avalanche I captured today in the Rocky Mountains near Canmore, Alberta. I'm so glad I had my zoom lens attached when I saw the avalanche.

Again this year, there have been many deaths from avalanches. Most of the deaths this year are from snowmobilers who high-mark. High-marking is where a snowmobiler attempts to ride as far possible up a steep slope, then turn and come down. Many climbers and backcountry skiers have also been involved in avalanches.

This time of year is especially bad as the snow pack is very unstable. It doesn't take much for the snow to come down.

Happy four anniversary Janice, you were one of the first people to welcome me to site and you have remained a GREAT FRIEND to this day, for that I am eternally grateful. High marking is a very dangerous pastime and I feel this practice should be stopped, not just for the riders, but for the rescue crews that risk their lives to fine those caught in the avalanche.
What great timing you had here Janice and your excellent camera skills capture the powerful slide heading over the edge. Even the winds generated by large slides can knock down trees and your image shows the avalanche paths on the mountain slopes where trees cannot grow due to the slides. Fantastic image my friend, maybe the wind today triggered the slide lol. Hope you will be around here a long time Janice.

Hi Janice,

Congratulations on your four years at TN! Terrific capture of that avalanche! Very dramatic, well-composed shot. Great timing and excellent details. At 70mm, you must have been fairly close. The sizes of the trees at the end of the tree line give one an idea of the enormity of such an event. I sure wouldn't want to be anywhere close to it. Thanks for the information about avalanches. I found it very interesting. I have family members who go snowmobiling in the mountains. I think they're careful, but I always worry. TFS.

See you,
John
